Two reasons you want to learn Olympic style kettlebell snatches on top of your traditional snatches.

1) Olympic style snatches involve ankle extension (heel off the floor) as opposed to a traditional style with a heel on the floor. Nearly all athletic movements involve extension of the ankle, knee and hip. So, it’s important to train movements with triple extension.

2) lifting the kettlebell without a big backward swing, requires a much quicker and greater recruitment of muscle fibres, ie a greater CNS response, thus resulting in better power development.

One suggested set of progressions to get to Olympic style KB snatches:
– good single arm swing
– good single arm clean & high pull
– good traditional snatch
– good traditional snatch with ankle extension
– finally get into Olympic style KB snatches
