So, this past weekend at the ADCC trials (the Olympic trials of BJJ), I was talking to a young guy, and we were chatting about what we were seeing at the tournament & what we’ve been seeing in general amongst recent BJJ competitions.
He asked me what I thought the new “Meta” was in Jiu-Jitsu.
Another young guy came up to me and told me the Meta right now is “this/X” position/technique.
I told both of these guys that, in my opinion, there is no meta right now, but there is a trend set by the medalist at this year’s trials.
I’ve been around the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/grappling world for upwards of 20 years and you’ll see new positions pop up, give a short-lived advantage to early adopters of said technique, and will be recycled through over the years.
A lot of these techniques are taken advantage of more in certain rule sets like ADCC favors turtle defense, therefore you’ll see a more vast and unique level of back takes in that ruleset.
Rulesets often incentives grapplers to be extremely efficient for said ruleset, which is why certain techniques will pop up, die down, and reappear in that ruleset.
But If I had to say there was a “Meta” (a trend) I would say that (if looking at podium winners) being a well-conditioned & fit athlete is a very obvious key to being successful.
Anyways I’ll go over this idea a little deeper in the video. Hopefully you found the ideas in the video to be useful, if not at least interesting.
Thanks for watching!
