Today we have a question from Dan, a former high school and college Wrestler, who has recently got into Jiu-Jitsu, and so naturally he asks:
What advice would you give a Wrestler getting into Jiu-Jitsu?
The most important piece of advice I could give a Wrestler in Jiu-Jitsu is this:
Go to the place no Wrestler wants to be when they start Jiu-Jitsu…
Play off your BACK and learn how to play guard!
In the video, I’ll give you a few reasons WHY you need to this in order to progress as far as possible in Jiu-Jitsu.
I’ll also talk about abandoning the idea of being a “Wrestler” and how holding on to this will actually hurt you and not help you as a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner.
You’re not a Wrestler anymore. You have to be open minded and this self-identification as a “Wrestler” can be a very limiting factor for our Jiu-Jitsu.
You are now a Submission Grappler, a Jiu-Jitsu practitioner, who needs to understand the ground game, submissions, etc.
Also, you’ll need to consider the fact that there are many great Wrestlers in Jiu-Jitsu, who you will probably never out wrestle. Therefore, you’re going to need to develop a game that allows you to beat those guys, even if there are only a few of them, when you meet in competition.
You want to have a well-rounded versatile game, so that no matter where you get put, whether you’re taken down or swept, you are as comfortable as you can possibly be.
Quiete often people come into the game with a Wrestling pedigree, and once put on bottom, they completely fold because of their once sided training methodology.
If you’re a Wrestler getting into Jiu-Jitsu, I hope you found the ideas in this video helpful. You’ll get far taking the initiative to get out of your comfort zone!
