The Best Jiu-Jitsu Search Engine in the World
Today’s video comes from a guy who has a match coming up against someone with better takedowns than him who has beaten him once before.
He’s looking on some ideas on how to get the win against the competitor in their upcoming BJJ superfight.
In the video I’ll talk about the challenge he faces, which many big people in BJJ face. Which is, he likes playing top game but has bad takedowns. His gym also doesn’t do much standing work either.
The video will outline one of the best competition styles for Jiu-jitsu for someone with these sorts of issues.
Below are the resources talked about in the video.
Free Video Resources:
Sacrifice Throw w/ Comp Footage
Sacrifice Throw Video #2
Half Guard Pull to Single Leg or Sweep

Hope the videos and resources help!

Today I’m going to show you guys a move I’ve used a few times in BJJ competitions.
It’s a pretty unusual move, but it’s effective, nonetheless. This one will catch your opponents off guard if you do it right.
I’m showing this in the Gi as a reaction to the Collar Choke, but it also works well in No-Gi BJJ/Grappling too. Just focus on having some sort of choke threat.
I hit this at IBJJF pans in 2013.
Most people don’t expect to get submitted as they’re escaping the back, but that’s why I love this one so much.
If you’re looking to name it, this is what I’d call it: The Reverse keylock from back mount.
This clip was from my annual Costa Rica BJJ camp. If you’d like to attend, just check out the link below:

What’s up guys,
today we’ve got a question from a 16-year-old boy who wants to do his first MMA fight.
He’s been training kickboxing for about 10 years and recently started BJJ.
The young man says he needs to prove something to himself, so he wants to try a Mixed Martial Arts fight out.
He passes this idea by his mom and she is not too keen on the idea. She does not want him to fight and this clearly does not make the young man happy.
He sends a message asking what he can do to convince his mother to allow it.
Honestly, there’s probably nothing you’re going to do to convince a mother to allow you to fight. It’s natural. Even my own mother hated watching my MMA fights, let alone my Wrestling or Jiu-Jitsu matches.
Now, what I would say is this:
It’s not the time for you to fight yet. There are pros and cons to doing it, but there will always be time to do it. Take that time. Develop your skills, get older/stronger, get more competition experience in Kick Boxing and Jiu-Jitsu, etc.
I’ll dive deeper into why you should take your time a bit more in the video above and give you a couple ideas to chew on.
Hopefully, you found this video helpful.
Thanks for watching!

Today we’ve got a question from a BJJ Black Belt in his late 30s, Bob, who was training with another Black Belt, who was in his early 20s.
While they were rolling at Jiu-Jitsu practice the Young, competitive, Black Belt caught Bob in an Arm Bar.
As Bob was working to defend, the Young Black Belt tried his hardest to break the grip with 20 seconds left, and all of a sudden Bob tore his peck.
Now, Bob needs surgery & it will be 8-12 months before he’s back on the mats.
He wants to know what my perspective on the situation is, if he should be pissed at the young Black Belt, etc.
In this video, I’ll address this “safe submission” in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu that got Bob injured & dive into why I would not call it “safe”.
I’ll also give you guys a training tip that will make you a better finisher in competition & help you keep your training partners healthy when you finish submissions.
Hopefully, you found this video helpful.

What’s up guys,
So, today I will show you something that messes up newer white belts when they get on the bottom of someone’s mount.
the Mount is one of the most miserable positions to be stuck under in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. In general, White belts’ ability to escape from pins is an issue.
That’s why I’m addressing it today.
Another big issue is that many of us freak out due to lack of experience and trap ourselves in our partner’s mount before we even get a chance to escape.
If you do what I’m about to show you, and you’re a white belt that gets submitted every time you end up in Mount, you’ll definitely see some quick improvements in your overall Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu & Mount Escape game.
Hopefully, you found the ideas in this video helpful.
Thanks for watching!

So, recently I posted a video where I was talking about the Meta in Jiu- Jitsu (Here: https://youtu.be/amAv2DVbrTs) where I answered questions from a few younger guys at ADCC Trials.
A fella commented to the video (and I’m paraphrasing here):
“Hey, love the videos, been watching you for years. I think I have to slightly disagree on you with this one. I agree that being lean, fit, and strong will help you in Jiu-Jitsu and this can be taken for granted in all Martial Arts.
If we’re looking to analyze trends in the technical game in modern Jiu-Jitsu, then that’s a different question in general. I would argue that the technical meta in martial arts, including BJJ, is niche specialization. Becoming a master of lesser-known positions and force your opponents to play where they’re really weak or inexperienced.”
I totally agree with everything this viewer says. This has been an early Idea that I’ve been talking about forever, in regard to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
It’s super important to have a narrowly focused area of Jiu-Jitsu, where you’re extremely competent and maybe even master level at.
In this video I’ll talk about how some of the best guys in Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, or Wrestling who get known for a set few techniques.
Anyways, I’ll dive deep into the topic of specialization of this video and what I mean by “Meta” in this video.
Thanks for watching!

Eugine and I discuss whether or not Jiu-Jitsu has gotten better in the time we have been around.
We discuss the depth of Jiu-Jitsu competitions now, higher level leg locks, great wrestling, etc.
Overall, I feel like the quality and skill of Jiu-Jitsu athletes is a lot better than it was 20 years ago (not that it was ever bad), Whether that be a result of higher numbers, more quality comps, different types of training environments, etc.
Do you think that the quality of Jiu-Jitsu has skyrocket in the last 20 years? Let me know what you think in the comments below!
Thanks for watching.

What’s up guys,
In today’s video we’re going to review some 3 basic Collar Chokes that every BJJ White Belt should know from top & bottom!
This comes in response to a German viewer named Tina, who says:
“I’m new to Jiu-Jitsu and struggle with all the names of different submissions, especially the chokes…”
She was wondering if I had a video explaining the difference between the various chokes in the Gi.
Sadly, I did not have a video explaining this, but that’s what today’s video is for!
In this video we’ll talk about the Cross-Collar choke, Loop Choke, and the Baseball Choke.
I’ll also show you some different variations of these submissions, and a simple way you can apply them from both bottom and top position.
If you train BJJ and also find yourself forgetting the names of these chokes or are just curious about a few great basic chokes in the Gi, then I hope you found this video helpful.
Thanks for watching.

Today’s video is going to be a breakdown of Mighty Mouse’s takedown that he hit at the recent Pan Am Championships in the Open Weight division.
If you guys don’t know, DJ, one of the greatest MMA fighters ever, is also a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Brown Belt who is pretty darn good too!
Ironically enough, he actually competes mostly in the Gi! He’s not your usual MMA fighter and I think that’s what makes him so good! Anyways,
Recently I made a video saying that you should usually practice takedowns with grapplers around your same weight class, for different reasons.
Now, that said, about a day later MM goes against a huge opponent in the Open Class at gi Pans, taking him down with a slick Single Leg, and this prompted quick responses back to my previous video.
So, do I think I was wrong?
I do not, and in this video, I’ll talk about that and even break down the epic takedown that Mighty Mouse hit at Pans.
I think this Single Leg is one of the best takedowns in the Gi, and hopefully, you find it useful too.
Thanks for watching.

Today we’ve got a question from Chris who’s been training BJJ for a few years now.
He says that he has a “lazy Jiu-jitsu problem.”
When he’s fighting for takedowns, getting his guard passed, and even searching for submissions, he tends to give up before he meets too much resistance.
Essentially, he just rolls over and dies when things get tough.
He wants to be more aggressive and is wondering if I had any tips on how to develop that aggression.
In this video I’ll explain how Chris doesn’t have a lazy Jiu-Jitsu problem, he’s not lazy. He’s training, exhausted, etc. However, what’s going on (probably) is that Chris, like many people for whatever reason, has not been taught to fight through positions.
This is something that has to be trained with your coach, or something you can train yourself.
I’ll give a few examples to help with the problem, even comparing a few values from sports Wrestling that can help you with Chris’ Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu problem.
Hopefully you found this video helpful, especially if you are struggling with a similar problem to Chris.
Thanks for watching.

Today’s video is going to be a rolling video of my Purple Belt, Dakota, and I rolling at a Costa Rica Jiu-Jitsu camp.
Dakota is a fun roll, super technical, and has a cool story. Before he started training BJJ he was 30% Bodyfat!
Of course, it was more than just BJJ that helped him get to where he is now, but it’s always cool to see the progress people can make in a relatively short amount of time.
You’ll see both of us look for passes, sweeps, and submissions. In general, it’s a pretty fun flow level roll.
Hopefully you guys enjoyed the video!
Thanks for watching!
