A really difficult technique for many new White Belts in BJJ is breaking the closed guard. Many times when they try they get knocked off balance, have their grips disrupted or get swept in the process.
Now I honestly prefer a standing guard break to open the legs in full guard. But for a lot of people early on the lower guard breaks will be easier to use. Kind of like standing guard passes. I tend to find lower, tight, guard passes are easier for newcomers whereas standing guard passes take a bit more time to develop.
In today’s video I’m going to show you some common mistakes to avoid when breaking the guard using the low staggered hand position. This video is mostly for White Belts in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu but I’ll be honest with you. Some of the details I share in this video I didn’t learn until I had been training for many years.
So I hope this helps!

Today’s video comes from a newer BJJ White Belt who discovered Brazilian Jiu-jitsu like many people (at least in my gym). He started listening to Joe Rogan, then Jocko and then somewhere along the line found me.
His main question to me is about discipline. He says he wants to develop more of it but he’s never really been a disciplined person. And so, he’s wondering if I have any tips on discipline.
So, in this video I talk about what I really consider discipline. Because I think it can mean a lot of different things. And it’s not simply being a tough hard ass. As I talk about in the video. Discipline really comes down to 1 thing, at least in my view.
If discipline for BJJ training, and in general, is something you struggle with then I hope the video is useful to you.
Talk to you next time.

Today’s video is an idea that came from questions I received from both BJJ White Belts and higher belts who are rolling with brand new White Belts in their gym.
Basically, the White Belts are injuring people on accident or being super spazzy and feeling bad about it.
On the flip side the higher belts are worried about getting injured with the less experienced students.
So in this video I share an idea for higher belts in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu to consider when rolling with new BJJ students. It’s an idea I learned the hard way after getting elbowed, kicked, slammed over the years. But if you take the lesson home it’ll allow you to roll with newer students to help teach them and at the same time avoid being injured.
Thanks for watching and I hope the video helps.

Today’s BJJ question comes from a young jacked guy who said he’s doing really well but experiencing a problem. That problem being that some of the guys he’s beating make excuses about his strength.
This is a common problem in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu where people have been conditioned to believe that technique is all that matters. And then when they run into a strong or athletic person they realize it’s not the case. That strength and athleticism plays a huge role.
In the video I answer his question and address why his more experienced teammates are so frustrated. And why it’s more to do with the person than it is with him.
If you’re in a similar situation with your training partner then I hope this video helps!

I recently did a video title: 4 Full Guard Sweeps Every BJJ White Belt Should Learn As Early As Possible. It was fairly popular and several people asked for some open guard sweeps as well.
So in today’s video I’m going to show you 5 different BJJ sweeps from 5 different open guards that even a beginner or White Belt can use. I say this because I learned all of these sweeps as a beginner. And I teach them to my students who are newer with lots of success. I can also say that I’ve used every one of these sweeps in rolling or competition against Black Belts as well. So they’re effective at any level.
Hopefully after watching you’ll have some extra ideas on open guard options in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
Oh and if you’d like to watch the original video I did from full guard. You can check it out at the link below.

Do Black Belts have bad days on the mat during BJJ training? This is the question I got from one of my White Belts in the gym and 1 of the followers who is a Purple Belt.
In the video I answer the obvious, which is YES, of course I have bad days. But I’ll explain why I have less bad days during my Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training and how I do that. Hopefully you can take an idea from the video to chew on for your own training.
Hope the video is helpful to you regardless of your current skill level in grappling.

In today’s Bjj technique video I show you 4 fundamental full guard sweeps that every White Belt should learn as early as possible. I call them fundamental sweeps because they’re essential techniques that have useful movements which can be used in a myriad of positions in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. And I say that every BJJ White Belt should learn them early because they can be used to setup combos and other attacks that will serve them well until they’re a Black Belt.
For instance the scissor sweep is a good basic sweep that is great for learning to open your guard and progress to open guards later on in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The bump sweep is great as a sweep but also is incredibly effective off-balancing technique that can lead to lots of other options in Brazilian Jiujitsu. And each closed guard sweep in this video has the same qualities to it.
Hope the video is useful to you and your training.
Thanks for watching.
