Stop Getting Smashed in Side Control as a BJJ White Belt (Try This)
Getting flattened out in Side Control and being stuck underneath someone can be one of the toughest things to deal with as a White Belt in BJJ.
In the video a 6 Week White Belt is having this exact problem. He’s getting flattened out and crushed underneath larger Blue and Purple Belts.
Now as I express in the video. If you’re a BJJ White Belt and you’re against a Blue or Purple Belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
There’s probably nothing you can do to deal with it.
Their experience in Brazilian Jiujitsu will typically be too great for you to deal with.
But one of the simple lessons that really makes a big difference when trying to escape Side Control.
Is start by forgetting about the actual escape. And see if you can simply stay on your side.
If you’re on your side, your ability to escape Side Control goes up dramatically.
And I find that my White Belts experience a sharp increase in their ability to escape Cross Side in BJJ by simply focusing 1st on staying on their side.
So if you are experiencing this same issue. My challenge to you is this!
When you’re rolling during your next BJJ class. Just see if you can stay on your side by using the tips described in this video.
Hope the video helped!

Do You Get Nervous Rolling with Higher Belts in BJJ ?
Have you ever been nervous about rolling with a higher belt than you in BJJ?
This is the problem one of the White Belt viewers said she is having when she trains.
When she does Brazilian Jiu-jitsu she struggles to just “go for it.”
Her mindset is that she is going to lose, so why even go for it.
In this video I try to share the idea of “Im going to lose, so lets go after it!”
I also share some stories from my students and my own experience about this mindset.
One story actually came from one of my BJJ competitions where I beat a Purple Belt as a White Belt.
Hopefully if you have trouble rolling with Higher belts in Brazilian Jiujitsu this video and mindset will be helpful to you!

I Tapped from Pressure as a BJJ White Belt ( Here’s How I fixed it )
Back when I was a brand new White Belt I had a nasty habit of tapping out from pressure during a roll.
You see, what would happen was, I would roll balls to the wall crazy. Spazzy and full of energy. In a lot of cases during the roll I would control the positions and what happened.
But eventually I would putter out and my BJJ training partner would then take over and submit me.
Sometimes with a technique and sometimes with just pressure.
Recently I received a question from a BJJ White Belt who is having the same trouble during his Jiu-jitsu practices.
He says that during his Brazilian Jiu-jitsu class. Most things go just fine.
But then! He will gas out and feels forced to tap from pressure when someone gets into Mount.
And he sent me a message about any tips I could give him.
In this video I share what I did to overcome this issue with my Brazilian Jiujitsu training and how I was able to relax and breath even when someone had lots of pressure.
If you’re White Belt in Jiujitsu and having the same trouble I’ve had, as have many others. Then I hope the video is helpful!

I'm Going Backwards as a BJJ White Belt
I’ve often heard White Belts in BJJ say they are going backwards in their training. And from the vantage point of an experience coach. I can see that this is simply not true.
But why do these newer White Belts in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu feel this way?
So many students have expressed this feeling to me over the years that I’ve settled on what I think is the culprit.
In many cases when a new White Belt starts their BJJ training. They often do all sorts of weird things that are technically unsound. They squeeze when they should push, move when they should remain in position and zig when they should zag.
This is often just due to inexperience and stress. While they get acclimated to the training and learn the rules of Jiujitsu they often just make up for the lack of knowledge with all sorts of mistakes.
Here’s the kicker though. Because they engage in this odd way. It often buys them a little time or at least throws off their opponent. This is because they are doing things that people are not trained to do. So it throws off the rhythm of their more experienced counterpart.
Eventually after the White Belt begins to settle down and use the techniques that have been shown to them. They find themselves getting picked apart.
This is due the fact that they are engaging in the territory of their more experienced training partners and will leave them sitting ducks for a while till they get better.
This is a must though. Everyone has to go through this learning face with their BJJ training. Because while the inexperienced spazzing out might buy you time. It will not ever allow you to win.
In this video I share some insights on this issue that many White Belts in BJJ face.
If you’re a newcomer to Brazilian Jiujitsu. I hope the video is helpful to you in your grappling training!

You’ll Have This Moment As A BJJ White Belt ( If You Keep Training )
How can you catch up to the people in front of you in BJJ as a white belt? How do you stick it out in training when you get frustrating because nothing is working?
These are the questions our friend Jeff asked concerning his BJJ training.
He’s being doing Brazilian Jiu-jitsu for about 2 months and says everyone in his gym is either a 2 stripe white belt or above. No matter what he does, he just continues to get smashed.
Getting smashed into the mat as a white belt in Brazilian Jiu jitsu is one of the most frustrating things in BJJ.
It’s fun at first but it becomes aggravating when you don’t feel like you’re not making progress. You just feel stuck.
In the video I share a story from my personal BJJ journey about how I got beat on for nearly 6 months of my BJJ training. Then eventually things started to “click” and I started to make noticeable progress.
This turned Brazilian Jiu-jitsu into something completely different.
If you’re someone who is experienced a rough patch in BJJ. Even if you’re not a white belt. Watch the video and see if you’re able to take some of the advice and apply to your situation and avoid getting frustrated, or at least have a way to work through it.
Thanks for watching! I hope the video helps!

Stop Thinking About Techniques As A BJJ White Belt
Recently one of my White Belts asked for tips on remembering techniques when he rolled. He said that there is so much stuff going on, and he can’t remember techniques when he rolls. He just brain farts.
In this video I share an analogy about how BJJ is like music in a way and I explain how it’s a little different than what you might expect. And you should not try SO HARD to remember techniques.
Many people who are new to BJJ start by trying to develop the ability to consciously memorize techniques during rolling. When in fact, it doesn’t happen like that. We call it muscle memory for a reason.
More often than not. Your body will figure out how to put it all together well before you can consciously think about what exactly you’re doing. This is why someone can execute a technique without being able to appropriately break it down and teach it to someone else.
If you do end up being able to consciously think about the techniques when you roll, it’s usually an afterthought. The move has already started and it’s just a fleeting thought in your brain.
In most cases, if you have to think about the technique you plan to use too much. It’s too late and your opportunity will be lost..
Saulo Riberio has a great quote, “If you think, you are late. If you are late, you use strength. If you use strength, you tire. If you tire, you die.”
I think what he is touching on is the importance of your body executing techniques in BJJ intuitively. Without having to remember techniques.
In my opinion this intuitive ability is developed through mat time and drilling.
You’ll know you are starting to develop this ability when you begin going off of “feel” opposed to thought.
Also, if you’re new to BJJ. Be ready for the occasional “Aha” moments that will occur from time to time. Where things seem to fall into place.
I share in the video that doing BJJ is like playing an instrument.
As a musician feels the music and knows exactly which chords to pluck just off instinct. The more your abilities in BJJ develop. You’ll find yourself doing things, not because you thought about them, but because they felt right.
So stop stop trying remember techniques as a BJJ White Belt. Remember what you can and be sure to drill your techniques a lot, and let your body do the rest. Don’t let the mind get in the way.
Hope the video is helpful!

Roll Longer As A BJJ White Belt With These Simple Tips
www.Chewjitsu.net
How to roll longer as a BJJ White Belt is something that I get asked all the time. Both from my students and from my Chewjitsu group online.
I remember this being an issue for me. Even though I was a young wrestler, I still struggled with being able to roll for a long period of time. I found that I just gassed out so quickly and it was frustrating.
One of the reason I has such a problem when I tried to roll longer as a BJJ White Belt was that I didn’t breathe correctly. It was really bad at times.
So bad in fact, that one of the commands my coach had drilled into my head was simple, “BREATHE!”
Yeah, that’s right. Not only did I drill my techniques but I also had to drill my breathing. When he yelled breathe. I was take a very deliberate breath.
In addition to breathing. Another thing that someone roll longer as a BJJ White Belt is to be more conscious of when they are using energy. Often I’ll see white belts being very tense and using LOADS of energy, yet nothing is happening. Learning when you can conserve energy and when you need to expend it is one of the cornerstones to becoming more efficient.
In this video I share some details on both of these tips.
If you’re trying to roll longer as a BJJ white belt. Listen to the tips and give them a try!
Thanks!
