Here is a gi option from getting the bear trap from the top vs. De La Riva. The gi makes this position much easier to hold, and set up your offense whether it be passing or attacking a leg, etc. Again, it is CRITICAL to keep your top knee open as you secure the trap; otherwise you will need to recover with one of a few choice methods. Here we see some of the versatility of the bear trap used as a method of control rather than simply a calf slicer. In this clip, the bear trap is used to control and off balance my uke and expose an extended near leg. There are many alternatives to end this sequence ranging anywhere from simply sweeping an opponent to getting into attacking alternatives such as demonstrated here with a simple heel hook. Which one is for you could be determined by several factors such as personality, rules of engagement, and skill set to name a few. The purpose of this video is not to dissect the finishing mechanics of the heel hook, but to highlight a strength of the trap. Enjoy!
