A ‘must have’ in the BJJ arsenal. The hitchhiker escape from the Armbar. This technique can quickly turn a very bad day for you into a very bad day for your opponent. And it really is rather simple and the mechanics when you think about it – rather straight forward. The great thing is that many Jiu Jitsu competitors either forget about the escape (and hence the counter) or just have not seen it at all. Give it a try on the mat. Let me know how you do. You might have seen me use this in rolling. It’s a fantastic submission and offers a level of leverage that the regular footlock does not have. It catches people by surprise and is very effective in competition. Watch the video. Give it a try and let me know how it goes.

I try and roll in a long sequence with my students where they come in fresh one after the other after I’ve had a good rolling session during class. This keeps my cardio up and ensures that I need to keep on top of my game. Take a look at this video where I use some of the techniques that I’ve spoken about in previous videos. About Head Instructor Lachlan Giles:

Lachlan earned his BJJ black belt in July 2012 and is the 2014 Australian Jiu-Jitsu Grand Prix Champion, multiple time Pan Pacific and Victorian Jiu Jitsu Champion and has competed at 4 World Championship events.

In 2014 he completed a clean sweep of the black belt division at Australia’s most prestigious competition, the Pan Pacific Championships, winning 4 gold medals. In 2015, he competed in the ADCC Championship and later reached the semi-finals of EBI5.

Outside of BJJ, he works as a physiotherapist, and holds a PhD from La Trobe University.

This is a fantastic footlock that is still legal at whitebelt level in competition.

An easy mount escape – straight into a footlock. I love this as being mounted is a really tough spot to be in…and to turn that around into a tap is fantastically rewarding. This is one of my favorite sweeps – The Leg LASSO CATAPULT Sweep! Why? because it also involves one of my favorite guards the spider guard.
