Escaping head lock control (Kesa Gatame) is part of our white belt syllabus. Why? because it is so fundamental to the sport of Jiu Jitsu. Learning this fundamental technique, early and correctly sets you on the right path. In our academy, many people use Kesa Gatame to full effect. The escape is mandatory. Check out this video. We are now dealing with a savvy opponent. They are aware of the sweeps from x-guard and they know that they need to control the variables. By moving and posting forward. But that just opens up another opportunity with a simple ‘sidekick’ – old school karate style. But used to create distance, not damage. And with that distance, opportunities open up. Watch the video. Continuing on with the Overhook x-guard series…we now look at a very basic sweep from this position. It might be basic but is sure is effective.
