About Head Instructor Lachlan Giles:

Lachlan earned his BJJ black belt in July 2012 and is the 2014 Australian Jiu-Jitsu Grand Prix Champion, multiple time Pan Pacific and Victorian Jiu Jitsu Champion and has competed at 4 World Championship events.

In 2014 he completed a clean sweep of the black belt division at Australia’s most prestigious competition, the Pan Pacific Championships, winning 4 gold medals. In 2015, he competed in the ADCC Championship and later reached the semi-finals of EBI5.

In 2016 he won the ADCC Asian Trials and earned a spot at the 2017 ADCC Championship which will be held in Helsinki, Finland.

Outside of BJJ, he works as a physiotherapist, and is currently completing his PhD at La Trobe University.

This may be different to a lot of academies…but I get the feeling that it’s probably not. The toughest guys in my academy – are around 40 years old! now that might be counter intuitive. One would suspect that as the decades move along that the students would get a little weaker. But, certainly, in my academy, the opposite seems to be true. The reason for this phenomena is, I think, simple…the 40-year-olds don’t come with bags of ego and just forget about the bullsh@t and just want to learn, roll and get better. It’s that simple. Any why should it be any other way. Let me know your thoughts guys?

A great documentary on Rolls Gracie.
Rolls Gracie was one of the most important members of the Gracie family, being the family’s champion in the 1970’s, considered to be the father of modern day jiu jitsu through his ideas on cross training in different martial arts. Rolls is arguably the most influential figure in the history of the sport, having affected most of the following generations in jiu jitsu, including great practitioners such as “Carlinhos” Gracie (founder of Gracie-Barra), Rickson Gracie (BJJ legend), Royce Gracie (UFC Hall of Fame), Romero Cavalcanti (Founder of Alliance BJJ team) and many others.

Jamie Foxx is an Academy Award winning actor, singer, and comedian. He can currently be seen hosting “Beat Shazam” on Fox and in the movie “Baby Driver” in theaters now.

Kesa Gatame is the Japanese for Head lock control. We can often end up in this position if our opponent or training partner looks for an underhook when on the bottom. That is an opportunity to grab his other arm and pull it up, kick your left leg through to be under his tricep…while you get under his head with your other arm. Then all of sudden your training partner is staring down Kesa Gatame! and it’s not a great position to find yourself in. There are many submissions from here…

Hi guys – this film is from a recent class in which I take my students over the details of a mount escape that move into either a hook sweep or an Ashi Garmai. Either move is great. I like the Ashi Garami because it provides the instant opportunity for a leg attack – such as a footlock. The hook sweep is fantastic as well. There is reward for careful viewing guys…take a look at the detail and I am sure you will be able to take a tremendous amount from it. Give it a try on the mat and let me know how you go…
