Principle 19: Isolation
Tactically containing one or more of your opponent’s limbs for your advantage.

Whether used for the finalization of a submission, the neutralization of your opponent’s defensive structure, or the impediment of movement, the Isolation Principle is about gaining a resource advantage through the restriction of mobility. All joint locks techniques require the targeted limb to be isolated and restricted from pressure releasing mobility. Precedingly, the Isolation Principle can be applied to neutralize a defending asset. Finally, the Isolation Principle can be used to control an opponent by restricting the mobility of the limb that might be used to actualize an escape.

Officer Jeff Muai of the Richland Police Department researched several defensive tactics programs before settling on GST as the optimal solution for his agency. Due to travel and budgetary constraints, he couldn’t get approved to do a live GST Level 1 in-person instructor course, so he decided to complete the course through the GST Level 1 online instructor certification program with one of his colleagues. In this review, he outlines his initial concerns with the online course, and then he shares what it was like to go the the live GST Level 2 course after graduating from the Level 1 program entirely online.
