Sometimes uke is really wary of your newaza and he turtles up really tightly. If you aren’t able to penetrate his defenses, the referee will call matte. So you have to do something to (i) create movement (ii) force him to open up. Here’s one way to do it.

Yoko-tomoe-nage can be done from a static situation but if you do a little run to the side, you will create amazing kuzushi to propel uke over. The Japanese are particular fond of this approach.

What a fantastic transition by the Russian. His uchimata fails but he immediately follows up with a kind of morote-seoi-nage for waza-ari and then continues into groundwork to win with juji-gatame off his back. This is what flowing, seamless judo is all about.
