Forget what you thought you knew about the history of BJJ!

There are a lot of people putting out books or writing on BJJ websites claiming to know the truth about the history of how our Art developed.

But, they always have a politicised agenda so you aren’t getting the truth but only their “truth.”

Roy and Erkan are unafraid to tell you the true history and one of the things that no one in BJJ will touch is how much Grandmaster Helio owes to Ip Man (whom he never credited).

Did he take Ip Man’s techniques and, if so, was it borrowing or outright thievery?

You decide.

Erkan and I have been reviewing the techniques for his Purple Belt Test. This is not an instructional Per Se as much as a quick reminder of the techniques so that Erkan can practice them.

This video covers one of the hardest passing positions to defend against – namely, when your opponent is in your half guard and switches their hips.

It becomes extremely difficult to keep their knee trapped at this point. It’s imperative that before they settle into that position, you address it.

Going to a half butterfly guard is my favourite option and one that is part of my Purple Belt Curriculum.

From this position, we can recover guard, sweep or take the back.
