Getting to the back is one thing, but controlling it and effectively attacking from there is a different story. My feeling is that you need to be fundamentally sound and controlling, but also relentless with combining threats, conventionally and unconventionally. During a recent seminar, Mirco Wendt (Head Coach of my Affiliate in Schwerte, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Schwerte) was asking me to review a couple defenses to being caught in a headlock against a wall.

This is just a quick review but I hope it helps.

Something I preach all the time is that if you can’t defend strikes from the Guard, then you don’t have a guard.
Period.

It doesn’t matter all the cool moves you know if you can’t defend and stay safe from the single most common attack there is: punches.

Here, Mirco Wendt, Head Coach at Brazilian jiu-jitsu Schwerte shows how to defend strikes from the Closed Guard and then transition to the Vale Tudo Guard.

He follows up with a Tripod Sweep for when the opponent tries to stand up and escape.

This is a video on my Patreon channel that I have unlocked.

People will say that BJJ for Sport and BJJ for Self-Defense are the same.

They absolutely are not.

You should train both but the differences are greater than just a few subtle adjustments.

It’s about understanding how to fight at a different range (and how to make the fight happen at your preferred range) than you’re probably used to.

It is about Control.
This is not a skill you can master by training it once in a while.

Whenever you add in new threats (punches, weapons, etc.), your distance management has to be adjusted.

And, Self-Defense scenarios involve completely different threats than those in a Sport setting.
And, if you don’t train to deal with those threats, you are basically untrained no matter what color the belt around your waist is.
