2 feet on the hips adds extra torque and throws off conventional escapes of Ash Garami. I explain several different options here. Try it out and see if you like it more or less than conventional Ashi

In December, I traveled to Mirco Wendt’s Academy, Monkey Gym Schwerte, to teach a 2 Day Seminar for just the Academy Students.
It was on Pressure & Control: two aspects of grappling and fighting that I feel are not really focused on or understood anymore.
This is how Mirco described it after:
Roy emphasized Jiu Jitsu is the art of control and not the art of Submission.
One of the main tools for control is pressure, so Roy covered the fundamentals for that kind of game, like proper weight placement, body misalignment, air restriction and more…
We were all amazed cause we we had never experienced that kind of pressure before. Great thing about that approach is, the top game player almost never used lots of strength or grips, instead it was absolute effortless to control the bottom person with correct alignment of the own body, misalignment of the opponents body and weight distribution.
What I as a plus 40 year old bjj hobbyist love about that kind of game is, you can play it as young gun, but also as a matured grappler over 40/50, because it doesn’t depend on attributes like strength or flexibility: everybody can do it.
Perfectly in relation to sustainability and longevity, great for self defense, competition or mma.
And, in a personal Message, he told me the immediate success he had with what he learned:
“Hey mate. We played with the “Pressure” game… it is so fantastic.
We rolled for control and I tapped the guys only with pressure and control and without Submissions ?
This happened never before although I am training for almost 10 years now. Thanks a lot for all the gold nuggets.
We really could up our games again after your seminar”
Contact me if you wish to schedule a seminar with me.
I will be putting these details and concepts and techniques and many more into my upcoming Pressure and Control DVD going soon

You have numerous control points when holding someone in side control.
This is important to understand.
Many people begin to lose side control and abandon the whole process and try to make a big desperation movement to a whole new position. This usually just turns into a scramble which only helps their opponent.
As I said you have multiple control points which means that when i lose one of them I can simply focus on another.
In this case, I control the head. When I lose that I control the elbow. When I lose that I control the leg.
In this scenario, all of these stop my opponent getting off their back and taking my back from the Kesa Gatame.
I’ll be going much more in-depth into these concepts and mechanics in my Pressure & Control DVD
Recently, BJJScout posted a video of a person getting submitted by a forearm choke in an MMA fight (picture in the thumbnail).
They asked if this was a dirty move in training. To be specific, the move is simply where someone who is mounted on you presses down on your neck with their forearm.
What is mind-boggling to me is that anyone in BJJ would think this was a dirty move and wouldn’t allow it in training. There are of course moves I don’t allow during rolling but I still teach how to defend those moves.
Because it would be irresponsible for me not to. But, I’ve met a lot of students who didn’t learn how because their coach just said “don’t do that because it’s dirty.”
I find this instinct amazing for a few reasons:
* First, and foremost, this is absolutely one of the most common attacks an untrained person will do to you. And, if you’re not training how to defend it then you’re basically unprepared to deal with a common real-world attack.
So, if you are not training to defend this, then you really are unprepared for real self defense. This is what I mean when when I say BJJ schools are teaching people how to defend BJJ but not to defend against the real world.
But, this might be why I submit a lot of bjj people (who know how to defend all kinds of esoteric BJJ techniques) with this choke.
* It’s amazing and embarrassing that this guy didn’t know this very basic defense. It’s actually taught in the original Rorion & Royce tapes that many BJJ people say is too basic and outdated. And, yet, I’ve met very few BJJ people who know it.
A lot of much more dangerous techniques are allowed at many academies and are not considered dick moves. A forearm choke is certainly far less dangerous than an inverted heel hook.
* Many BJJ practitioners and schools portray themselves as Spartan/Gorilla/Viking/Sharks but having to deal with someone pressing their arm on your neck is a step too far?
So, here I show how to defend this submission. Again, I’m not teaching an escape (obviously an Upa is an option here). I’m teaching the Defense. First, you have to learn how to defend a move for when you can’t immediately escape.

CJJ Worlds is approaching quickly, and on November 23 we will crown a new Middleweight Champion!
As we prepare for the big event on UFC Fight Pass, let’s take a look at one of the favorites to push through his side of the bracket, Dan Martinez.
In this video, Brandon Mccaghren breaks down and analyzes his beautiful Heel Hook entry finish against Sergio Rios at EBI 17. This was an opening round bout in a 16 man Combat Jiu Jitsu bracket.
Martinez is a Black Belt from the Tampa, Florida area and he went all the way to the Semi Finals at EBI 17. We expect another big performance from him on November 23 in Monterrey, Mexico exclusively on UFC Fight Pass!

Kesa-Gatame isn’t something that BJJ practioners use often which is why it can be so effective. Since, they don’t train it very often, they don’t train defending it very often.
