This looks really weird, I know….but read on for an amazing exercise to work the under trained transverse abdominis. Critical for spinal stability and hip & lower back function. @jack_jitsu @paulbjdo .

The key to this exercise is to NOT create tension in the outer abdominals.

Place a small weight of 5-10lbs just above the belly button. Then, by breathing from the diaphragm AND relaxing the outer abdominals, DO NOT ALLOW THE WEIGHT TO DROP.

This exercise is easy if you tense up the outer core, but incredibly challenging when done correctly. After 30s or so, you’ll feel your ‘inner’ core shaking.

Activation of the transverse abdominis is key in providing stability and a solid foundation for the spine and hips. When it’s not activated, the prime mover muscles try to also act as stabilisers, which over time can cause a whole host of problems.

Slow and smooth is key here, control over speed. Try and keep a long spine throughout and minimise movement in the limbs that are not active.

When doing it weighted, keep it super light. It’s not about lifting a heavy weight, just enough for the shoulders to stabilise against.

The difference with this bridge is that there when I move my legs, there is next to no movement in the rest of my body. The hips need to remain completely still, no rotation.

The spine also stays long and neutral and there is not over extension of the hips.

I’ve only been able to hit 3 BJJ sessions a week the last few weeks, but I’ve been supplementing that with sessions playing on the gym ball.

Nothing can replace live BJJ training, but I believe using a gym ball is one of the best ways to develop BJJ specific movement when you can’t make class.

Came across two interesting studies recently. 1) Effects of shoulder girdle dynamic stabilization exercise on hand muscle strength. A Kobesova et al 2015. 2) Do changes in hand grip strength correlate with shoulder rotator cuff function? I Horsley et al 2016.

Study 1 found, vs a control group, participants who used Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilisation for the shoulder girdle five times per week, showed signifciant improvements in grip strength. Study 2 found, a strong correlation between grip strength and lateral rotator strength. @paulbjdo .

There are many reasons to slow down your movement training, here are just two.

1. Slowing down makes you hyper aware of your movement and this increased body awareness will make you more efficient and effective on the mat……particularly a focus on your breathing!

2. When we slow down we are forced to rely less on the prime mover (superficial) muscles and bring into play the deeper stabilising muscles, that are often in many people, not firing effectively and the cause of many physical problems – been doing lots of work behind the scenes on this! 1st ever attempt trying to close an @ironmind Captain Of Crush #3. I’ve done no gripper training (with the exception of the last couple of days) for over a year. .

Given how much I’ve heard about the C.O.C. #3 (it’s the first certification level) I was pretty pleased I could close it partially. It feels achievable with the right training.

Lastly, while anything that makes your grips stronger, will have some cross over to BJJ, I’m not convinced a crushing grip is that necessary for BJJ. View the video in my bio for areas that are essential.
