Don’t Get Too Comfortable from the Guard in BJJ
Today’s question is about having a garbage top game in BJJ. In the question he says he is decent at guard passing but is unable to maintain top position.
So in this video I share a couple of tips on developing better top pressure and positioning from top.
The 1st tip is about changing your mindset with the BJJ techniques that you’re trying to execute.
In Brazilian Jiu-jitsu if you’re comfortable with a particular position like Guard or fighting from the back.
You may find that you will give up top position because you’re perfectly fine with dropping back to Guard to work from bottom.
If this is the cause. You will have to approach your rolls during a Brazilian Jiujitsu practice with a different mindset. A mindset of being a tough top player who doesn’t give up top position.
The second part of the video gives a couple of basic tips and principles from Side Control on putting yourself into a heavy and properly aligned angle on top.
Things like blocking the hip in side control, not crossing the centerline of the person’s body and keeping your hips tight will all help in developing a strong top position.
If you’re someone having a similar issue as stated in the video. I hope this video helps!

Kashiwazaki side control (Part 2 of 2) English Subs
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJv92SdA0FU
The most prominent Judo ground fighting specialist in modern times, Katsuhiko Kashiwazaki won the 1981 World Championships with a variation of side control in the final.
In this video, Kashiwazaki shows transitions from his favourite side control (yoko-shiho-gatame) position, to two other positions:
– north / upper hold (kami-shiho-gatame)
– mount / vertical hold (tate-shiho-gatame).
Notes on the translation:
—————————————
The English subtitles are original. The approach was not to translate every word, only the key messages.
Yoko-shiho-gatame means ‘side direction hold’
Kami-shiho-gatame means ‘upper direction hold’
Tate-shiho-gatame means ‘vertical direction hold’
Instead of the long names, I have used ‘side hold’, ‘side position’, or ‘side control’. I have used ‘north’ instead of ‘upper’, as it will be more familiar to English speakers.
Also, Kashiwazaki’s full instructional is over 2 hours long. I plan to translate other portions of it gradually. If there is a particular technique you’re interested in please comment and I will work on it first.
Subtitling is surprisingly time-consuming, so it may take some time – please subscribe and turn on notifications (little bell icon) so you don’t miss future videos!

Head Lasso to Paper Cutter
In this video I show a transition from the North/South Choke to the Paper Cutter. I also provide a few tips on how to finish this technique.
Often when I see this move performed it crushes the windpipe. While this can be a bi product of doing the move, it should be a strangle first (blood choke). Make sure to understand that the collar is one piece of cloth and the collar grip under the shoulder has the ability to tighten the choke as well.
Make sure your hips are turned towards your opponents and your only on one cheek. The pathway around the head is very important and adds a lot to the choke. Check it out and try it both ways during drilling and you will see there is a clearly better choke.
Sneaky Jiu-Jitsu Submission Setups – featuring Mike Pyle
Here are a couple of slick and sneaky submission setups from side control as shown by my friend and UFC fighter, Mike Pyle. This Americana and Arm Triangle are pretty high percentage from this position. Let me know what you think, and be sure to give credit to Mike when you tap your training partners or opponents in competition with these!
