People will say that BJJ for Sport and BJJ for Self-Defense are the same.
They absolutely are not.
You should train both but the differences are greater than just a few subtle adjustments.
It’s about understanding how to fight at a different range (and how to make the fight happen at your preferred range) than you’re probably used to.
It is about Control.
This is not a skill you can master by training it once in a while.
Whenever you add in new threats (punches, weapons, etc.), your distance management has to be adjusted.
And, Self-Defense scenarios involve completely different threats than those in a Sport setting.
And, if you don’t train to deal with those threats, you are basically untrained no matter what color the belt around your waist is.
