I was trying to think of a good Halloween-themed technique to put up today, and the Sorcerer (including the Zombie to get there) seemed appropriate. Plus it’s just a cool technique. So here’s a super quick breakdown of it.

In this sequence, I take my training partner “Adam” through one of the best stretching and mobility sequences for groin tightness using the Butterfly Stretch position.

Adam has had recurrent tightness in the groin and inner thigh which has led to pain, limited hip motion, and has impacted his BJJ training.

In this video, he makes a drastic improvement in his hip mobility in under 5 minutes using the techniques we went over!

I apply FRC (Functional Range Conditioning) principles into the treatment which have been an integral and very effective part of my one-on-one training.

Firstly, I don’t know what else to call this position and I definitely don’t claim to have invented it. This is however a fun and frustrating position with lots of great submission possibilities from it. This is a bottom cradle variation with rubber guard elements, making for a really strong position. I got a question about the Rubber Guard and specifically if there is any danger to the knees when hugging the knee as well as holding at the ankle to secure the position.

I reached out to 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt Brandon Mccaghren to break down the position, any safety concerns when utilizing the Rubber Guard, how to apply the technique properly, is there ever a reason to grab the ankle without holding the knee, the importance of following the opponent, the two styles of rubber guard, and much more.

This variation on rubber guard explores some extremely useful submission opportunities from a very effective position. Rubber guard is powerful whether gi or no gi, and this series is a great one.
