In my opinion, being able to takedown from various clinches should be the core of your takedown arsenal, at least in the beginning of your training.
I’m a big fan of knee block takedowns because they don’t require a lot of power and if they fail it is still possible to work into other clinch takedowns.

If you want to be able to effectively submit your opponent, you need to be able to control them first. It’s frustrating to pass his guard only to lose control after.

Even better, use your control to weaken and exhaust your opponent. This is the essence of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu – break down your enemy then attack when he is weak.

Cageside Concussioncast (now Dirty White Belt Radio) asked Royce Gracie Black Belt Roy Marsh to show you punishingly effective way to pin even the strongest or most flexible person from Side Control.

This way is great when you are doing No Gi and don’t have the grips you would normally have with the kimono. Add pressure to your sidemount!

Professor Roy also shows some tips on how to get to sidemount when someone is defending.

I joined Masters World Champion, Jason Culbreth (Royce Gracie Black Belt) at his academy and he showed me one of his favorite takedowns.

This is a great takedown that doesn’t take a lot of athleticism or agility and is easy to recover from if you miss it.

Most people learn the Keylock/Americana from mount as one of their very first submissions.

Then they stop trying it because they don’t have good success with it.

Professor Roy shows some details which will make it a “go to”
dangerous attack for you that will work even against the big strong guys.

This is a submission I’ve been using for many years that I call the “dirty kimura”.
I like it a lot since i don’t have to give up the underhook to get the shoulder lock.
This means if the lock isn’t working I can almost always go back to a good control position or escape a bad position immediately (if I lose the submission)
It’s especially effective against very strong opponents.
