Today’s video is a question from a viewer named Brandon who’s been playing Butterfly Guard in his BJJ classes.
He said he’s had a lot of success with it, but he says everyone is catching on and stopping his underhooks. So in the video I show a simple way to get the underhook even if the person is resisting. It’s something I’ve used a ton and has been very effective with my Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, so I hope it is for your BJJ as well.
Thanks for watching.

Hip pinning is one of the two most foundational methods of controlling an opponent in side control. Since we often are fighting our opponents legs before we pass the guard, focusing on pinning the hips first makes the goal so much easier as their leg moblity and movment is significantly restricted, and as we pass our ooponents hips already being on the floor makes the finish and control in side so much easier.

The principle of side tilt in jiu jitsu is one of the most important to understand. To ever pass the guard you need to be able to pin your opponents hips and by staying on your side intially, you make passing harder as well as increase your opportunity for offense. Additionally understanding this makes your goals in passing much more clear as well.

One of the main defenses to the berimbolo off balance is to back step the leg high. If you grab your opponents leg when they back step you can easily knock them over and this sets up the berimbolo.
When passing the open guard often your opponent will put their feet in your biceps to control space. This detail of putting your wrist on their shin makes it easy to clear the foot off the bicep.

This is an overview of understanding the de la riva guard in modern jiu jitsu. The de la riva is one of the most useful controls in jiu jitsu but it can be used in multiple different guards. I overview the foundations of what makes this hook work and the easiest ways to apply it in different situations.

This video I go through a simple system to create offense vs a strong stalling opponent. The key to attacking a stalling opponent is forcing them to move and open up, the easiest way to do this is to back up and pull on the collar to break posture, they will be forced to respond to this either exposing and Omoplata triangle choke or a loop choke. When you can effectively mix these systems itβs so hard to stop.
