In this video I give some tips on becoming more comfortable in the bottom of a tight mount position in BJJ. This video is a response to someone who sent in a question asking for techniques to escape mount. But I don’t cover techniques because he said he tends to panic and become uncomfortable with the position. In Brazilian Jiu-jitsu I believe it’s very difficult to survive and escape any of the dominant position if you aren’t able to get some level of comfort.
Now I’m saying you’re going to like being in the position or anything like that, but you do have to be able to relax enough to think and setup a proper defense in bad spots. This is true for any position in Brazilian Jiujitsu but I think it’s especially important in positions where you’re at a disadvantage and the smallest mistake could lead to getting submitted.
So if you’re having trouble panicking in the bottom of mount then I hope this idea of learning to get comfortable with the uncomfortable is useful to you.
Thanks for watching!

Ever have trouble holding the mount position in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu? It used to be a big problem for me and I know a lot of people who struggle with it. So in this video I touch on a couple of simple ideas to chew on in order to make your mount position stronger.
In the video I show a modified position that allows me to attack armlocks but it’s also good for holding the mount position itself. The reason is that by going to the position that I show in the video I disable 2 of the necessary things a person needs to escape efficiently. Frames and hip power. Without these, escaping mount is going to be difficult.
This will allow you to hold the position longer and increase your chances of getting a submission.
So I hope this video helps Brett and hopefully it helps you too!

The “90-90” position is one that I have found to be one of the most beneficial for Jiu-Jitsu.
Simply, it checks A LOT of boxes. This position can improve internal and external rotation, protects the hips, knees, and even the low back from injury, and will make your S-Mount in BJJ better in your ability to safely get into the position, maintain position, and go for submissions from the position.
In this video we work primarily on the back leg which can be focused on working the Internal Rotation component of hip mobility.
We start with a basic stretch, then a muscle activation exercise, and end with the most difficult portion where we hover the hip and not only activate the muscle around the hip, but get a dynamic stretch as well.
This position is also one that I delve into in my new course “Grappling-RX – Optimized Hips.” Find out more about my brand new course at https://www.grapplingrx.com/optimizedhips

Quarter guard can happen in many ways. Two most common occurrences are in the transition when opponent is escaping from mount or when your mid pass and they’re holding off for dear life.
Regardless, if you find yourself in the situation, this is a good pass to use.
