Yesterday I received a question from our friend who says he lacks the motivation to train Brazilian Jiu-jitsu some nights.

He says that a lot of times after a long day of work he struggles to get the energy together to workout and he’s wondering what I do to keep myself motivated.

In the video I share that I’ve never really needed motivation to workout. Whether it’s Brazilian Jiujitsu or lifting. I’ve never required motivation to train.

And this is because it makes me feel so good, and I don’t need to be motivated to feel good.

We do all sorts of things in our life that make us feel good. Eat, sleep, take pills, etc. And it requires little motivation most of the time to do them.

With exercise it’s no different. It makes me feel amazing after I’m done.

Even if I have a terrible training session or feel weaker than normal. I always feel good after the training is over.

I also share some details about a cool book I’m reading right now that explains all the chemicals that release in the brain and the physiological responses associated with exercise.

A lot of times in these videos it may come across as I’m always excited to train BJJ. That I never get tired. That I never lack enthusiasm.

And that simply isn’t true.

I’m human and lack excitement for training from time to time.

Very often one of the periods where I always feel a lull in my excitement for Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training is after big competitions wins.

The excitement of winning the tournament or fight always sends me down to at least a week of lethargy. Then it picks back up afterwards and I get back to normal.

I’ve found that if I try to fight against this feeling and push it, it simply gets worse. But if I simply go with it and give it time to run it’s course. I come back strong.

And in this video I talk about how the cool morning I experienced felt like I feel right now. The temperature dropped and life seems to slow down a bit after the rush of the summer heat.

Like that, I feel as though my body is slowing down after the heat of hard training and competition followed by the excitement of meeting new people at seminars.

And if you feel like this, lacking excitement or motivation for jiujitsu, don’t worry it happens to all of us. It’s ok.

“Get out of  your comfort zone…Challenge your self and Do something better than you are now”

Do you ever lack motivation for BJJ training? If so, how do you overcome it? What keeps you motivated.

I recently received a couple of BJJ questions related to motivation for training.

1 from Zach, a BJJ Blue Belt who is having some of the Blue Belt blues and is lacking motivation for training.

The other from Perk Kar on the Chewjitsu Instagram, who said, “lack of motivation how do we overcome it?”

In this video I do my best to share the idea that motivation is not what you need to keep training consistently.

Most people think of motivation as some sort of divine spark that is supposed to hit you and propel you forward to do the thing that you know you need to do or that you want to do.

I personally hate that spark and find a different type motivation far more useful for long term consistency.

In this Chewy ramble video I share the idea of creating your own motivation for BJJ training. You can become a powerhouse of motivation.

But it’s not something that magically comes to you. Instead you create it by taking action and moving forward towards whatever it is you want.

If you’re talking about Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training.

Make a ritual and schedule. And stick to that damn thing. If there is a secret to getting better and staying motivated. It’s keeping your disciplined habits and schedules together.

Having the structure to fuel your Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is far more helpful than any spark for training motivation. Because you wield it. . . it’s yours.

And instead of being so dead set on some long term goal. Your goal should be your rituals and schedule. Keep them alive and enjoy the little victories and the big ones will come.
