Is this the easiest side control escape in Jiu Jitsu? I think it could be…it’s simple to do and moves you into a position where you have options. I too spend time online looking at techniques from all sorts of people. I believe it is important to keep yourself up to date with all the latest happenings, and see where improvements and innovations can be made.
I had recently demonstrated a rolling knee bar from being the top man in a turtle position utilizing a wrestling leg hook, and I came across a video from BJJScout using that same hook here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hMhLL7Qrg8

I didn’t realize that the name of that hook was the “Merkle,” or that it could be used as a sweep from the knees or standing!
So in this video, I made some modifications to show you how you can use it in BJJ or MMA. Of course, I added some submission options such as the Bully Choke, the Knee Bar, or a Texas Clover Leaf. This position would also give you the opportunity to take the back or at the very least get a dominant top position. Check it out!

I have been asked many a time to add commentary to some of the rolls that I have filmed and posted. As my regular viewers would know, I roll regularly with my students. Many times in a continuous series. So that I get a chance to stretch my cardio and give the students time to catch their breath and think about their next attack/approach. As usual, I look to do techniques that we teach in class and that I show on The Grappling Academy YouTube channel. Not only did Naomi learn jiu-jitsu and regain the confidence that was shattered on that fateful July evening, but, with the help of Eve & Victoria Gracie, she learned the most important self-defense skill that one must use with bullies, friends, and especially bullies who call themselves friends.

In this video I show a “fly on the wall” video series of some BJJ X Guard Drills we were working on.
During the drilling cause we started with X Guard entry drills then moved into X Guard sweeps with some of them being cyclical style drills. Meaning I sweep you, then get up and then you sweep me. And the drill is continuous.
We spent the better part of an hour and half going through these different BJJ drills and this was after a week of drilling these same movements over and over again.
We all got a ton of value from it. Many of us after this week of X Guard techniques found ourselves hitting the sweeps and options effectively.
X Guard is one of my favorite positions in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu because I honestly don’t have incredibly long legs for my size and I often find myself there after working from positions like Butterfly Guard and Half Guard.
Since I have shorter legs and a thick torso. I can kind of ball myself up under a person to keep them off balance and achieve a sweep. I’ve used this style of sweeping against people much larger than me with great effect during rolling and Brazilian Jiujitsu competitions.
So if you’re looking for some BJJ drills to boost your X Guard. Whether it’s just getting to the position or sweeping. Hopefully these drills will be helpful to you and your Brazilian Jiujitsu game.
