Do you feel like you’re not progressing in BJJ like you should? Do you feel like you’re in the gym training but not making any headway?

This is the problem our friend who is a BJJ Blue Belt and is having an issue. He recently sent in a question asking for advice on how to deal with his progression in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and aggression during rolling.

In the video I don’t touch on the idea of aggression because it often gets used as a cure all for every problem many of the beginners. Whenever issues happen. Instead of fixing the technique issues, they just think they need to be more aggressive. Which is not the right idea I believe.

But during the video I do talk about the idea of setting expectations during Brazilian Jiujitsu training. And the idea that it’s dangerous to set them.

Setting expectations for BJJ training is the same as setting expectations for a situation that is not guaranteed.

It makes you focused on the fruits of your actions rather than the moment to moment action which is required to make progress happen during grappling.

Outside of BJJ, he works as a physiotherapist, and is currently completing his PhD at La Trobe University.

This may be different to a lot of academies…but I get the feeling that it’s probably not. The toughest guys in my academy – are around 40 years old! now that might be counter intuitive. One would suspect that as the decades move along that the students would get a little weaker. But, certainly, in my academy, the opposite seems to be true. The reason for this phenomena is, I think, simple…the 40-year-olds don’t come with bags of ego and just forget about the bullsh@t and just want to learn, roll and get better. It’s that simple. Any why should it be any other way. Let me know your thoughts guys?

A great documentary on Rolls Gracie.
Rolls Gracie was one of the most important members of the Gracie family, being the family’s champion in the 1970’s, considered to be the father of modern day jiu jitsu through his ideas on cross training in different martial arts. Rolls is arguably the most influential figure in the history of the sport, having affected most of the following generations in jiu jitsu, including great practitioners such as “Carlinhos” Gracie (founder of Gracie-Barra), Rickson Gracie (BJJ legend), Royce Gracie (UFC Hall of Fame), Romero Cavalcanti (Founder of Alliance BJJ team) and many others.

Marcelo Garcia was no doubt one of the best grapplers to grace Jiu Jitsu. His smooth transitions, focus on submissions, and humble personality has endeared him to all.

That was what made Robert Drysdale’s super fast tap out of him all the more impressive. I remember I was watching from mat side just after having lost to Robert in overtime, and being in awe of how quick he dispatched Garcia with the Brabo Choke.

Kind of made me feel better about myself, lol!

So when he teaches the Brabo, I listen. Many of you will be surprised to hear that he doesn’t even consider it a choke. He has a few gold nuggets that will completely change your understanding of the technique, and help you finish it faster!
