The Fireman’s Carry, or kata garuma, is one of the coolest throws found across multiple disciplines and sports. Whether it’s judo, jiu-jitsu, wrestling, Sambo or other grappling styles, this throw is exciting, dynamic and effective. However, traditional versions of it tend to require a good deal of athleticism. This modified version in this video, in my opinion, is a little more accessible. Since learning this one years again, I’ve loved it. So I’m sharing some of the details on it here, modifications, entries and finishes. I hope you like it.

Knowing how to defend strikes while on the ground is the most important skillset you must develop in your groundwork.
This means it should be trained as often as possible.
We covered some Fundamentals in how to defend strikes while on the ground in a previous video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WhBXIJZ-jwI&t=1s).
These are just introductions and not deep dives into these techniques.
However, these are essential skills.
If you cannot effectively defend strikes while on the ground then your groundwork is basically useless for protecting yourself.
The paradox is that in order to protect myself from damage, it often makes it more difficult to set up sweeps and submissions while doing so. That’s because I need space to submit him or sweep him.
But, space is also what he wants in order to powerfully hit me.
So, people don’t understand how to do both.
In essence, one way I can do it is in transition as he begins to try to make space. Crucially, I fill the space as he does until I have the opportunity to attack.
In this situation, my opponent tries to get to his feet to pull free and attack. But, he then gives me the opportunity to attack the Tripod Sweep.

In today’s video I share a tip that came from a recent conversation I had with Renzo Gracie Black Belt Shawn Williams on our Chewjitsu Podcast. The podcast is already out. So check it out wherever you listen to podcast.
It’s also available on YouTube at: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCTSmtpFVLcZGS7G599_vCow
Anyways, during the podcast he gave a tip on how to train more BJJ and get injured less. It’s a tip many of us (who have trained for 20+ years) have learned.
It’s a simple tip and definitely doesn’t apply to all rolling and training situations in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. But it can still be super useful to get more mat time in with less injuries.
And this is important because more mat time is what progress is built on. So more mat time and less injuries (which also means more mat time) means you’ll have more chances to work on your game.
Hope the tip is helpful.

Three current UFC champions hail from Africa. Welterweight and middleweight champions Kamaru Usman and Israel Adesanya represent their home country of Nigeria, while heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou grew up in Cameroon. All six of the populated continent have a current UFC champion.

Every martial arts develops to be more focused on defending itself than defending what “untrained” people will do.
BJJ is no different.
The vast majority of schools focus predominantly or exclusively with defending submissions.
Students rarely, if ever, learn or train how to deal with people trying to hit them – standing or on the ground.
Even if the person started BJJ classes in order to learn how to protect themselves, they never really learn how to protect themselves against the SINGLE MOST COMMON ATTACK they will have to deal with if they are attacked.
Or, if they do it’s a rare class once in a blue moon.
This is why many people (and even some BJJ instructors) believe is that if you want to learn to defend yourself, BJJ isn’t the Art you should choose.
So, here, Erkan and I give an introduction in how to approach defending strikes on the ground. This isn’t just a matter of a few techniques you need to learn but a foundational realignment on how you approach your grappling.
This is why it takes practice – because you fight like you train. And, you can’t adopt a whole new style of grappling when punches start flying.
This is also why I focus so much of my instruction on teaching control (even from the bottom).
If you like my particular focus and style of teaching, you can get this kind of instruction almost daily for only $10/Month.

A new lightweight champion will be crowned at Toyota Center on May 15, as Charles Oliveira and Michael Chandler do battle in the main event of UFC 262. Brazil’s Oliveira found his groove when returning to the lightweight division in 2017, and since then, he has gone 9-1, winning eight straight over the likes of Tony Ferguson, Kevin Lee and Jim Miller. Now he faces Chandler, who made an immediate impact in his UFC debut in January by knocking out Dan Hooker in less than three minutes. Plus, it’s a five-round welterweight battle when England’s Leon Edwards attempts to extend his nine fight unbeaten streak against returning star Nate Diaz, who is making his first start since 2019.
