my journey as a coach has arrived in its most challenging phase and I am excited for it.
exactly the same phase that we were as a competitor in 2010 – the beginning of the black belt – young, well accomplished in the color belts with incredible work ethic
in 2010 Rafa won Worlds at 20 years old, months after he won ADCC, we were training with a very small and focused group in a small city in Brazil.
we were training and teaching all day long, hungry and passionate, just waiting for opportunity to meet preparation.

never too young to start.
this is a short video of me teaching my son Ace some skills that will help him not only in Jiu Jitsu but in anything he decides to pursue in life. When teaching its important that we set the right expectations based on each student background and age, after you start and develop a good system it becomes a matter of work and consistence for you to improve. Ace is 2.5 years old and has been training at AOJ for a couple of months, at this age teaching Jiu Jitsu techniques is not the goal. To me its more important that he learns to follow commands, develop good communication skills so he can tell his training partners and coaches whenever something is bothering him, learn to respect people around him so he can grow up in a good environment and improve his body coordination and balance, so he can eventually learn the jiu jitsu techniques.

for the last 8 years art of jiu jitsu has elevated the standards in the jiu jitsu community. starting with the aesthetic of the gyms all the way to the professionalism of the programs, transforming the old school “fight club” style into a real martial art family friendly school. for the last couple of years it has expanded its reaches, merging into a new area: creating new products that would reflect the vision of the brand and would allow people from all over the world to have a piece of our work.
the online training program has thousands of members from every part of the world learning the art of jiu jitsu style of teaching and it was always a personal goal for us, that now is a reality that benefits a lot of people.
the latest collections of gis brought back something from the roots of the art, the clean, minimum details, no patches uniforms – it became a record of sales for us.
the pandemic gave the brand new challenges and just like any champion, our mission has always been to rise above any challenge and become better with any given experience. we created new products that would allow people to enjoy jiu jitsu at home: the home mat and the medicine ball, both in white and minimum details, always true to the identity of the brand.
the academy in costa mesa is recognized by the whole jiu jitsu community for its kids program. families from all over the world travel every year to visit the facility and experience the environment that produces so many young champions. just like anything in life, behind any success theres a crazy amount of work and dedication that is never seem. this time we created something that will benefit not only academy members, but professors and students from any gym, it will also help parents to play with their young kids at home or allow professors to teach classes or private classes that are much more elaborated and organized.
we needed a dummy that did not look like a body bag laying in the corner of the mat, that had a clean and modern looking and was light enough for a 4 years old to carry it around. so we created the art of jiu jitsu training dummy, something that we are happy and proud about and we hope you also enjoy it.
amazing, but not even close to his full potential, trust me. the best is yet to come.
