If your Over Hook Guard is getting stalemated, we can open up the position by pushing their head away – setting up a nice omoplata.

While the omoplata can be a nice submission, it’s not the highest percentage move, especially in MMA. For that reason, we should always be prepared to transition and ideally take top position if they escape.

This is a short clip from the belt promotions we did at my gym back in October 2022. In the clip you’ll see me promote one of my students to Black Belt. It’s been around 10 years since he started and he’s been one of the most consistent people on the mats even being 40 when he started BJJ and is now 50 years old. He’s had some injuries along the way and kept coming and gotten very good at Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.

In the video I also share why I try to give Black Belts that I wear to my students when I promote them.

Confession – I love doing this move. I’ll be honest, I don’t get it often (I have short legs so it makes it a little hard to reach at times), but when I do, oh boy, it’s like being a kid in a candy store. There are so many submission options here, and your opponent is essentially helpless to stop you.

This is a good move for everyone to know, but if you are a long legged person, you should really pay attention to this.
