Triangle Chokes are one of the most effective submissions from the bottom positions and can be a huge problem for any top player or guard passer. In today’s video we have a question regarding just that situation. Our friend Nick who is a wrestler type who is coming into BJJ is getting caught in triangle chokes left and right and he’s wondering if I have any tips on dealing with the situation.

In this video I share tips on both a triangle choke defense and how to defend it. I used to struggle with the same problem as a wrestler who would get caught in triangle chokes while passing guard. I also show how I corrected the issue.

I also share how I like to look at the triangle as a position which has multiple stages. I consider 3 stages of triangles to be a starting point which I explain in the video.

From there I talk about some tips to escape the triangle in stage 1, or a loosely locked triangle. I’ll work on escapes for the future if in a deeper position.

When you roll, you should have fun but you should always focus on something specifically.

For most people, that focus´is exclusively getting the submission.
for me, I tend to focus most of my rolls on different kinds of controls and pressures and studying them.
This doesn’t mean I have to go hard or just smash or completely control my opponent.

More often, I do a kind of flow where I can focus on feeling what’s happening with the movement and his reactions to my weight and blocks.

There are many different kinds of weight (and methods of control) that I use but in this roll, I focused mostly on what I call “dead weight.”
In my upcoming Pressure & Control Instructional, I#ll be covering them all extensively.

I also discuss some knee cut passing principles (sorry about the audio)

How intense should your BJJ training be inside the gym when you’re wanting to prepare for a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu competition or possibly MMA? This is today’s question.

In this video I touch on the topic of intensity 1st and the idea that you can’t really know the intensity of training until you experience it in person.

When you compete you essentially have a license to fight another person in the agreed upon rules and it’s completely ok. This isn’t true anywhere else in society.

I experienced these conditions in Wrestling tournaments, Brazilian Jiujitsu competitions and MMA fights. And I can tell you that from my personal experience, when you’re competing you’re tapped into an intensity that just isn’t present in normal conditions.

At the very least it’s hard to do.

From there I briefly talk about how you might prepare for a competition using a mixture of intense and lighter training to allow the body to recover.

This video came from one of our BJJ open mats a while ago.

Jess (my girlfriend) has been training Brazilian Jiu-jitsu off and on for a number of years.

I was in a particularly silly mood as you’ll see during the roll.

The video doesn’t give away any mind boggling new techniques or anything. But I figured I’d share it because it does show something important.

PLAY.

While there is a time to be serious and hard with our BJJ training. It’s also valuable to be have fun and just play around. The rolling doesn’t have to be for all out progress or some new skill. It can be simply just playing around.

In mammals play is often how we are wired to learn. And it’s only as we humans get older that play is frowned upon as a mode of learning.

One of the toughest parts with competitions early on is taking the loss. If you’re a seasoned competitor it’s pretty normal and you become used to the sting.

But with Brazilian Jiu-jitsu practitioners who are new to them. That can feel terrible.

In today’s video our friend who is a Blue Belt has lost the drive to train BJJ anymore after a competition loss.

The BJJ tournament was so intimidating to him that he says he never wants to one ever again. And because he began training Brazilian Jiujitsu to compete he now doesn’t know why he is training.

In this video I share about how my very 1st competition was a loss and the sting of that. I also explained how the contrast of my 1st win made all the difference.

If you’re in a situation where you are drawn to competing but for some reason had a bad outcome. That doesn’t mean you should give up. I believe in the situation you double down on your efforts.

Even if it’s simply to experience 1 win. You need to do that. Because it’s that getting knocked down then getting back up mentality that will carry over to every aspect of our training and lives.

The Toreando Pass in BJJ is one of the most basic passes people learn early on. That said it can still be effective at a higher level if used well.

There are a number of high level competitors with strong guard passing who use the Toreando pass as part of their arsenal.

And with just about any BJJ technique there are a lot of variations and different grips to be used. And the Toreando / Bullfighter Pass in BJJ is no different.

And so in this video I share some ideas on this basic guard pass. Which is in response to a question I received from Youtube.

So if you’re someone using the guard pass in your Brazilian Jiujitsu training or competitions then I hope this video is useful to you.
