It was great to be able to feel that sensation of competitive feeling again, especially in the middle of all these problems that we are going through.
I am happy to be able to help some people who were going through difficulties during this time.

We are almost in the middle of the year and the first time in my career as an athlete I’m not getting ready for this competition which is the Jiu Jitsu World Championship that takes place every year between May / June in Long Beach, California.
With all that going on in the world what is left for us is to remember, here it’s a video with my best moments from this competition in 2019 and the achievement of my 12th and 13th World Title.
Good memories, goals achieved, dreams come true and broken records.

Back in 2010 when I got my Black Belt and started to compete against the most experience fighters I remember I had a lot of trouble fighting on my feet, so I had to pull guard a lot, but it wasn’t that easy to sweep a experience opponent and I ended up losing a few fights because of that.
So because of those loses I realized that a fighter must be complete and I decided to focus on the my take down game, I knew if I started Judo it would take me years to be in a high level to compete against those Judo Black Belt Fighters, so that’s why I focused more on wrestling than Judo. I ended up creating my own #TakedownSystem , it’s a mix wrestling ,judo and Jiu Jitsu techniques that combined help me out a lot to be really efficient on my feet.
I am sharing a lot of my mindset, techniques and secretes in my last instructional with @bjj.fanatics and don’t worry because it’s not about being explosive or strong but always “FIGHTING SMART NOT HARD” mindset.

•••••• Em 2010, quando peguei minha Faixa Preta e comecei a competir contra os lutadores mais experientes, lembro que era muito difícil sair na frente no placar com uma queda, então eu sempre acabava puxando para a guarda, mas não era tão fácil raspar oponentes experientes e acabei perdendo algumas lutas por causa disso.
Então, por causa dessas derrotas, percebi que um lutador deveria tem tem que ser completo e decidi me concentrar no meu jogo de quedas tambem, sabia que se eu iniciasse o judô, levaria anos para eu estar em um nível alto para competir contra os lutadores de judô, é por isso que me concentrei mais no estilo do wrestling do que no judô. Acabei criando meu próprio #TakedownSystem, é uma mistura de técnicas de wrestling, judô e Jiu Jitsu que combinadas me ajudaram realmente a ser muito eficiente em pé.
Nesse meu ultimo instrucional com o @bjj.fanatics estou compartilhando muito da minha mentalidade, técnicas e segredos, e não se trata de ser explosivo ou forte, mas sempre de ter a mesma mentalidade “LUTAR INTELIGENTE NÃO SÓ SAIR NA PORRADA”. Espero que vocês gostem.

Just watched the last Baleia’s @riccardoammendoliabjj Breakdown and it’s amazing to see him explain in a really good way how simple and effective the Folding Pass is and how it can be used by anyone. It doesn’t matter the weight, size, or body type, the idea is to always use the least amount of effort possible with maximum efficiency and at the same time make your opponent work really hard to defend and use a lot of energy.
In this video he showed how I have done this pass over the years and how I perfect it. It’s not about only the technique but there is a mindset behind it.

(Link on my bio) – Im super excited to announced that we just launched the new Instructional Video from my series “The Buchecha Style” at BJJFANATICS (Link on my bio) . This one is “The Buchecha Folding Pass” – In this one I teach my entire system to pass any guard using the FOLDING PASS. Some of the reasons I love the Folding Pass, are because I can pass any guard on the knees without needing to stand up and working on those complex guard passing styles. Also I developed the folding system because once I torn my ligament and had to have surgery back in 2015, I couldn’t use explosive / athletic guard passings anymore, so the folding pass was the best one I found, because it does not require athleticism or speed to be executed. Its the type of pass that I can go slow, little by little, draining my opponent’s energy, until I get the side control. In this system, I taught all my entries to the Folding Pass which I pretty much have at least one entry for any type of guard. I also taught how to overcome any adversity that can happen when you use the Folding Pass. Im a truly believer that if you have all the entries and all the options against the adversities, this passing can change your game, as it will be very hard for anyone to stop you passing. In this video you can watch and understand a bit better what I do to beat the Worm Guard… In this situation Im competing against Keenan Cornelius, who is probably the best one on this type of game. First thing, I just placed my left knee on the ground to get a better base, and controlled his lapel with my left hand and his pants with my right hand. Doing that, I feel confident enough to change my base and break his worm guard grip. One thing that is very important to understand is that my hip and both legs are always supposed to be stronger than my opponents’ arms, so once I change my base, kicking my leg back, it’s almost impossible for him to keep control of the lapel. And once his grips are broken I can just move to the other side doing what I call the “Quick Pass” or set the traditional Folding Pass, and little by little go towards the side control or mount. I actually paused the video in the moment that I could chose the “Quick Pass” or “Folding Pass” and the reason I chose the “Quick Pass” Is because I felt that once I broke the lapel grip, I had to move quick, to not give him any chance to set the lapel guard again… Every time I’m passing I always try to go to the Folding Pass or some of the variations, like this one for example, because I know that those are the passings that I will have a higher chance to pass or tire my opponent out… Soon I will make a post explaining how I use the Folding Pass to go to the mount… I hope these videos are helping you to understand how I think when Im passing the guard, and on my next instructional about Folding Pass with @bjj.fanatics I show and teach almost 30 different variations and details on how to use the Folding Pass.

In this video I’m competing against a good friend and one of the competitors that I admire and respect the most – Felipe Pena. Felipe has one of the best cardio and guards in the Jiu-Jitsu World. If you try to exchange cardio with him it’s almost sure that you will get tired first and he will end up catching you. In this case, nothing is better than the Folding Pass. Once we get the Folding Pass, the main goal is not even to pass his guard; it’s just to tire him out and force him to work. As you can see in the video, everytime Felipe tries to move, I just follow him side to side, forcing him to work and draining his energy. This is my main goal with the Folding Pass, every extra bit of energy I can drain from my opponent is something that I can capitalize on during the match. At this level of competition there are two things that can never happen: 1 – we can not make any fatal mistake and 2 – We can’t get tired. So if you find a way to make your opponent tired, and if you put him in a vulnerable position where mistakes can happen, you have a much higher chance of winning. And this is exactly my goal with the Folding Pass. Force him to work, and tire him out. In this match I was not able to pass Felipe’s guard, but I believe that forcing him to resist it, was probably the detail that made me win the match. If I had not gotten this position I would probably have gotten tired sooner than him. Soon I will make a post explaining how I use the Folding Pass against the Worm Guard.
