Professor Gustavo Gasperin and Dr. Mike Piekarski, DPT break down the kinematics of the Toehold submission.
This is video #2 of a video series explaining anatomically how leg lock submissions work.
“A toe hold submission attacks the ankle right, but how does it work? There are multiple joints working at the ankle complex, particularly the talocrural joint and the subtalar joint.
The talocrural joint allows the foot to lift up and push down (dorsiflexion and plantarflexion). This is the joint that is primarily targeted by an ankle lock.
The subtalar joint allows the foot to fold in and out (inversion and eversion). The toe hold submission targets both joints (talocrural and subtalar) simultaneously by folding the foot down and in (Combining plantarflexion and inversion). There are two ligaments that prevent this movement: anterior talofibular ligament and calcaneofibular ligament.
These are the same ligaments that are damaged from a typical rolled ankle (ankle sprain). Stay tuned for my next post differentiating a traditional ankle lock from an achilles compression.”
The Straight Footlock: In A Gi: By Luiz Panza
2x Black Belt Pan Champion Luiz Panza shows his unconventional way of doing footlocks. Some call it weird, but he gives a great explanation of the details he uses and why.
Luiz is one of the best guys in the world at getting footlocks. Check out his DVD “Hidden BJJ Secrets” Also available ondemand. https://bjjfanatics.com/products/hidden-bjj-secrets-4-dvd-set-by-luiz-panza

“What’s the difference between an ankle lock and achilles compression?
A variation on the straight ankle lock is the achilles tendon compression. When dealing with someone who has adequate ankle mobility this variation may elicit a quicker tap compared to the standard ankle lock. Prior to applying a compressive force you want to bring the ankle to end-range plantarflexion so that the tendon has the maximum possible tension.
To finish this variation you use the styloid process of the radius (bony prominence on the end of the forearm/wrist) to compress the tendon at near the base of the calcaneous. The forearm acts as a fulcrum by using the ankle for leverage. The perpendicular shear force introduced by the bone onto the maximally taut tendon will force even people with “flexible feet” to tap.
The advantage of using a move like this is that it targets a musculoskeletal structure which is highly innervated compared to ligaments, which are not. Often when grappling an opponent ignorant of leg locks they will respond too late and by the time they tap damage already occurred. This variation will get the desired response regardless of their knowledge of lower extremity submissions.”

Marcelo Garcia: Preventing & Escaping Leg Attacks
2 Part Lesson – With no grips or controls holding your opponent and your guard in open empty space, you’ve recognized his intentions of attacking your vulnerable foot. Open your hip and point your knee down to reveal the heal of your foot as you kick against the opponent’s center with your non-captured leg to free your ankle. If the opponent has crossed your leg and fell back, remove his legs from your path and latch onto his hands and upper body until you can safely scoot around out of his submission attempt.
