Big Secret – My 40 Year Old Students Are The Toughest!

This may be different to a lot of academies…but I get the feeling that it’s probably not. The toughest guys in my academy – are around 40 years old! now that might be counter intuitive. One would suspect that as the decades move along that the students would get a little weaker. But, certainly, in my academy, the opposite seems to be true. The reason for this phenomena is, I think, simple…the 40-year-olds don’t come with bags of ego and just forget about the bullsh@t and just want to learn, roll and get better. It’s that simple. Any why should it be any other way. Let me know your thoughts guys?

Get Into The 50/50 – Then Into A Footlock!

One of my favorite position is the 50.50. Now as the name would suggest you are in exactly the same position as your training partner. So no advantage. But not so. If you have practiced this more. Perhaps much more – then you are at a distinct advantage. And a great transition is into this footlock. And in competition, the transition will constitute a sweep and will be one of the easiest sweeps you will get. Check out this video. It’s incredibly effective. Very powerful and a lot of fun. Mental health in BJJ is really not discussed that often…but many, many people suffer from anxiety, depression and other forms of mental health issues and find that BJJ is an extremely effective antidote to these problems. In many ways, the sport might be uniquely placed to help. I myself have suffered from anxiety and have found that Brazilian Jui Jitsu has been enormously important for dealing with this mental health issue. The Jar Lock Kimura!

I love the Kimura. My Students love the Kimura. But sometimes, you are going to be in the position that you just can’t seem to be able to finish the Kimura. You just can’t seem to get a tight enough grip. Not surprising when your training partner knows what you are up to and fights like hell to stop you. But that fight ends here guys. Just adopt the Jar Lock Kimura and you will finish evertime. The effectiveness of this lock and some other little tips and tricks I cover in this video is just supreme. You are going to love it. The Hip Bump Triangle!

The Hip Bump Triangle – this is one of my favorite triangles. And like many people…I found this triangle from loving the sweep and then completing the triangle as an organic combination. But what really tipped me into using this technique was when I saw Ryan Hall use this, not as a part of the sweep, but as a direct ‘attack’. It really is effective. How To Tie Your Belt – The Right Way!

When we first start Jiu Jitsu one of the most daunting aspects can be ‘how to tie your belt’…and those that come from a traditional martial arts background find out pretty quick that their belt tying style doesn’t quite hold up to the intensity of grappling. The result – belts come off during a roll. This is no good…particularly if you are up against an opponent that likes to use the gi for gi wraps…that’s just handing them a weapon. Here is a great belt tie that I use. And I think you will love it. Watch it carefully and give it a go (if you don’t already).

Get the 50/ 50 Position Take The Sweep Into A Footlock!

The 50/50 Position – Some people hate this position. But I love it. Why, well, probably because I use it. Sure the position can be used for stalling…which is no good… but if it’s used for sweeps and attacks – then this is the move for you. And it certainly is the move for me. Watch this video as I discuss how to use the 50.50 to get a great sweep and straight into a footlock or other potential attack positions. It sure is killer! Enjoy guys. Collar Drag – Then Take The Back!

Where do you go from having your opponent in guard? well, the answer for a Jiu Jitsu practitioner is ‘almost anywhere’ – why? because this is one of the sports main positions. Where you go from guard and can define your ability in the sport. One of my favourite transitions is to move from guard into a back take. And guess what guys…it’s much easier than you think. With a little practice and of course technique. Watch this video as I discuss some of the nuances of this transition and what it can open up for you. I know you are going to love it.
