This video I discuss the Shallow Lasso and Single Sleeve Control. This Guard is in my opinion one of the most important to understand in jiu jitsu because it is extremely easy to set up and allows for transitions to so many other guards, if you want to be able to set up berimbolos crab rides, matrix back takes, or de la riva guard you need to have good initial controls.

Here’s BJJ black belt Jon Thomas explaining the pros and cons of the shallow lasso hook vs the deep lasso hook from spider guard. This is an excerpt from https://www.grapplearts.com/the-open-guard-system/ which will give you a complete gameplan for the open guard!
This video I breakdown my system for passing the double sleeve guard. This guard has two main styles one is the spider and the other is what I refer to as leg past body where your opponent has broken your grip on the non lasso side. First I deal with preventing your opponent from getting into double sleeve by hiding your free arm and using a knee cut pass pressure to kill the lasso I have show this system before here ( https://youtu.be/t2I5xWr_8bs ), then I show how to kill the spider using the loop out and throw method I have shown before here ( https://youtu.be/cJJLmy4UChI ) Finally the final method I kill the leg past body by trying to get a grip on the knee and trapping the leg or using a combo of the lasso loop out and shin slide. I hope you like the video. If you have any questions please comment and let me know.

These 3 Triangle choke setups are really sneaky and I have been using them a lot recently after studying Felipe Andrew. When developing a guard itβs not only important to have good systems and sweeps but also to have some really dangerous submissions that are hard to predict because it keeps your opponent in a level of fear which makes them more defensive. I included conception clips of all the techniques. Hope you like the video and please comment and ask questions if you have any.

This video I discuss one of my favorite transition which is switching from a single lasso to a fat ankle grip. This is a powerful combo because it allows you to switch from an upper body control game to a dominant lower body control series with the far sleeve. Furthermore it allow to you attack the far side leg which is often the one people struggle against because they are not use to leading with the opposite leg. Hope you like the video and please comment if you have questions or requests.

Hey guys this video I go over two common guard retention mistakes that mess people up when trying to defend the guard pass. Paying attention to the angle of your hip as well as using the inside arm to frame will make a huge difference in your ability to recenter your hips. Let me know if you have any questions or requests.

This is a new guard position I have been developing over the last year, I call it The Vice. It is a position I stumbled across while trying an old school lasso inverted triangle attack, I stumbled across this control that locks your opponents hand under your leg allowing you to force a triangle/armbar and many other attacks ( Crab Ride, Berimbolo, Ankle Lock, Wrist Lock, Guard Passes, Crucifix, Omoplata) also it is very difficult to get out of. In addition it also is very hard to escape by falling back to your guard which gives the added benefit of making it off set the constant sweep battle that happens in competition. I have been testing it on many high level competitors coming through the gym the last year and it has been working great so far. Iβm going to be getting back to competition soon and hope to get some great footage with me and my students in competition using it. Iβm also excited to see the positions you all create since itβs a new position it will be fast evolving. Let me know if you have any questions or thoughts and please try to use it in class your self and post videos of it and tag @JonThomasBJJ #TheViceGuard #TheVice

This video I discuss the difference between playing the deep lasso position and using a shallow lasso which I generally prefer. The deep lasso is more of a specific attack, where the shallow lasso is more commonly used to transition to all sorts of other guard positions as well as use as a defense and initial entanglement. I also go through the utility and aspects of the meregali deep lasso in between legs variation. Let me know if you guy have any future techniques questions and requests.

this week bjj technique is a basic spider guard sweep that you must know .
Β
In this video I show a transition from the North/South Choke to the Paper Cutter. I also provide a few tips on how to finish this technique.
Often when I see this move performed it crushes the windpipe. While this can be a bi product of doing the move, it should be a strangle first (blood choke). Make sure to understand that the collar is one piece of cloth and the collar grip under the shoulder has the ability to tighten the choke as well.
Make sure your hips are turned towards your opponents and your only on one cheek. The pathway around the head is very important and adds a lot to the choke. Check it out and try it both ways during drilling and you will see there is a clearly better choke.
Ritchie Yip shares the technique he’s been using to pass the leg lasso spider guard, which can be an incredibly irritating type of guard to try and pass. Download my free checklist of positions and techniques for learning BJJ at http://www.grapplearts.com/book
