Professor Gustavo Gasperin and Dr. Mike Piekarski, DPT break down the kinematics of the Toehold submission.
This is video #2 of a video series explaining anatomically how leg lock submissions work.
“A toe hold submission attacks the ankle right, but how does it work? There are multiple joints working at the ankle complex, particularly the talocrural joint and the subtalar joint.
The talocrural joint allows the foot to lift up and push down (dorsiflexion and plantarflexion). This is the joint that is primarily targeted by an ankle lock.
The subtalar joint allows the foot to fold in and out (inversion and eversion). The toe hold submission targets both joints (talocrural and subtalar) simultaneously by folding the foot down and in (Combining plantarflexion and inversion). There are two ligaments that prevent this movement: anterior talofibular ligament and calcaneofibular ligament.
These are the same ligaments that are damaged from a typical rolled ankle (ankle sprain). Stay tuned for my next post differentiating a traditional ankle lock from an achilles compression.”

“What’s the difference between an ankle lock and achilles compression?
A variation on the straight ankle lock is the achilles tendon compression. When dealing with someone who has adequate ankle mobility this variation may elicit a quicker tap compared to the standard ankle lock. Prior to applying a compressive force you want to bring the ankle to end-range plantarflexion so that the tendon has the maximum possible tension.
To finish this variation you use the styloid process of the radius (bony prominence on the end of the forearm/wrist) to compress the tendon at near the base of the calcaneous. The forearm acts as a fulcrum by using the ankle for leverage. The perpendicular shear force introduced by the bone onto the maximally taut tendon will force even people with “flexible feet” to tap.
The advantage of using a move like this is that it targets a musculoskeletal structure which is highly innervated compared to ligaments, which are not. Often when grappling an opponent ignorant of leg locks they will respond too late and by the time they tap damage already occurred. This variation will get the desired response regardless of their knowledge of lower extremity submissions.”

Keenan Cornelius, Knee Bar Trap Series: Jiu-Jitsu Magazine, Issue #24
San Diego, CA offers a variety of great opportunities; the weather, the beach, entertainment and especially jiu-jitsu. We had the opportunity recently to finally meet up with an individual who’s been getting a lot of requests from fans to be in Jiu-Jitsu Magazine. Enter Keenan Cornelius, who dropped some knowledge on us at Atos Jiu-Jitsu (http://www.atosjiujitsuhq.com).
In this video Keenan demonstrates his knee bar trap series from inside the half-guard, from his half-guard, and what he calls the knee bar guard. Assisting him is Leo D’avila.
For the full breakdown of all the moves seen in this video, as well as a personal Q&A with Keenan be sure to grab a copy of issue #24 of Jiu-Jitsu Magazine.
About Keenan:
Keenan Cornelius went from unknown purple belt to celebrity status within the jiu-jitsu community in an extremely short amount of time. He is the only competitor to ever win the Grand Slam of jiu-jitsu; which is double gold medals (both his weigh class and absolute/open weight class) in the four major IBJJF events (European Open Championships, Pan-American Championships, World Championships and Brazilian National Championships) all within a years time at his belt level (purple at the time). Keenan nearly competed a second Grand Slam at brown belt, narrowly missing by an advantage point at the World Championships. His website is http://www.keenancornelius.com.
