The traditional sode-tsurikomi-goshi is done off a sleeve and lapel gripping situation but these days lots of players tend to do sode off double sleeves, which gives you a lot more space to enter into the throw.

Abe is mainly known for his incredible morote-seoi-nage but he’s been known to do other variations of seoi-nage as well. One such variation is a 2-on-1 lapel, split-hip seoi-nage, which has to be seen to be believed. At the recent 2021 World Championships we saw a lot of action-reaction throws. A really basic yet super effective action-reaction throw is kouchi-makikomi, where you trick uke into thinking you are about to throw them with ippon-seoi-nage.
