In this video I give you guys a basic idea on how to get your question answered. I’ve looked in the Youtube comments several times and seen people ask, “How do I get my question answered by Chewy?”
And so I wanted to cover the best ways for you to get your question answered by me. Just a quick caveat, I get a lot of questions so I am not able to answer everyone of them. If I don’t I am sorry. I have a gym to run with students and a life outside of the gym. I do my best but I cannot get to all of them.
Here are the 3 best ways to get your question answered.
Social Media
Out of all the social media stuff like facebook, instagram, etc. I use instagram the most.
So you can send me a question via instagram at: http://www.instagram.com/Chewjitsu
If you do send a question. Make sure you’re following me. I give followers preferential treatment in regards to questions. I figure that’s only fair.
* I do check the Chewjitsu facebook questions once a week. Just not as often as IG.
Email
You can send me an email bit my email question form at: https://www.chewjitsu.net/contact-us/
If I choose your question I’ll reply back with a short answer and then save it for a video.
Youtube
And of course you can always leave it on youtube. Even though the got rid of the direct message function. You can still pop one right down in the comments. I typically scan through all the comments 2-3 times a week and reply to you guys as well as scope out questions.
BIG TIP ON GETTING YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED:
Please don’t send a monster wall of text with no breaks, paragraphs or a clear question at the end.
Having white space in the midst of lots of text is easy on the eyes. Big blocks of text are just hard to read.
And if I don’t have a clear question to answer I don’t feel like I can be of real help to you.
Alright, that covers the basics. 🙂
So keep on sending your questions and I’ll keep on answering them.

The Loop Choke in BJJ is an incredibly versatile and sneaky submission. It can be used as a choke, setup to a sweep and is available from many different positions.
In this video our buddy Doug requested a Loop Choke. I’ll probably do another video on the loop choke in the future. But in this video I’ll show you a basic loop choke setup and how it works.
So this video isn’t really the best on setting it up but it will show you the basic mechanics of how it works so you can use it if you like.
One big key I’d like to emphasis with you if you decide to use it is to make sure to apply pressure on the carotid arteries. Oftentimes when I see people practicing this choke for the 1st time. They have a tendency to apply too much frontal pressure to the wind pipe. This is both dangerous and not as a effective.
So be sure to keep a somewhat looser grip so you can secure the pressure on the carotids and get the proper collar choke positioning we are looking for.
Hope this video helps you.

Getting smashed in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is important! As a White Belt part of your beginning in BJJ is learning just how vulnerable you are. And when you get smashed and submitted by a higher level belt during rolling it makes you aware of the reality of the martial art.
In this video we have a newer BJJ White Belt who says he has submitted a Black Belt. He feels as though the Black Belt is actually using the full extent of their skill and that he is getting a legitimate tap on him.
His questions is whether or not he should lighten up on this Black Belt during training or keep going.
In this video, I share how I think the Black Belt is letting the White Belt work. I’m nice about it. And because I’m not there I don’t really know. But based on my almost 20 years of Brazilian Jiujitsu I have a good hunch what’s going on.
Many times experienced practitioners know the difficult road that lays ahead for the newcomer to Jiujitsu and so they try to ease the person into it slowly. Playing down significantly in their skill and ability.
In this video I describe a story from my gym to put the situation into context so that it can hopefully be helpful to our friend.
Thanks for watching the video.

Have you ever felt physically run down but then end up having one of the best BJJ training sessions you can remember?
Well in this video I share how not feeling your best can be a good thing for your rolling in BJJ. This comes from a questions from our friend who was coming back after an illness and said that he rolled really well by being focused on being defensive since his body was tired from the sickness.
In the video I share a story from when I was a Brown Belt rolling with a Black Belt training partner. And in the story I was in a very similar situation. I wasn’t feeling too well but I was preparing for a competition so I went to the gym to train.
During the Brazilian Jiujitsu training that day I had to focus on being defensive at first because I didn’t have the energy I normally did.
What was a amazing was that by being more relaxed and less aggressive during the roll I performed better. This was a bit of a shock to me but I talk more about it in the video.
Hope you guys enjoy the video. Thanks for watching.

Blue Belt Blues in BJJ doesn’t really exist. I’m going to just start with that. In Brazilian Jiu-jitsu some new Blue Belts get very attached to this idea of The Belt Blues as a reason why they’re having trouble being motivated.
And I guess if you put too much focus on the Blue Belt it could be tough. But I think the idea of attaching yourself and identifying with something is dangerous.
If you believe you are something, you’re that. So if you think you have Blue Belt Blues, then you have it.
But if you just look at it like a short lived funk in your Brazilian Jiujitsu training that you need to shake off instead of some sort of “condition” you’ll probably find it lasts a much shorter time.
In this video I discuss this topic as our friend is struggling with competitions and has become gripped by this idea of Blue Belt Blues.
If you’re struggling as a new Blue Belt in BJJ. I hope this video helps!

In this video I answer a question about the BJJ Arm Triangle Choke. The question was mainly about how to make the choke tighter rather than squeezing on someones jaw.
In the video I give some of my favorite adjustments to making the Arm Triangle tighter and a much cleaner submission rather than just driving into someones face.
In Brazilian Jiu-jitsu we always need to remember what our goal is with the choke submissions. Most often it’s to apply pressure to the carotids.
So when you’re drilling and practicing your techniques it’s important to use finesse and apply the submissions with focus on the true objective of that move.
During practice if you feel like you have to squeeze with all your might, it’s probably not technically sound.
Now when it comes to a hard roll or Brazilian Jiujitsu competition. That’s when you add the strength element into things.
Either way if you are struggling to finish the arm triangle choke. I hope this video is useful!

Recently I got a question from a female BJJ Blue Belt who was recently asked to help coach with a female only class. She is excited about the prospect but also nervous.
She’s nervous 1st because she is still beginning herself and so she’s wondering how to go from the mentality of a student to an assistant coach. She’s also curious about how she can help women stick around with training. She’s the only woman currently and she’d like to have other female training partners.
In this video I talk about a few things.
I discuss how I was in a similar situation when I was a Blue Belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and was asked to help. I go through how I did things in the hopes of helping our friend.
The big idea I share in this video though is about the way we learn as humans. Which is through modeling others and then creating our own style.
We do this through speech and even our BJJ training. I liken it to coming up to a forest and having a blazed trail. Someone has to blaze the trail.
And by carving a path for women in her area I think Karin will accomplish her goal of helping women stick around but also becoming a better teacher.
If you’re in a similar situation I hope the video helps!
