Today’s Q&A comes in response to a question about what kind of work someone should do in order to keep their BJJ and MMA training going and to possibly do this kind of stuff full time. So in this video I share some stories from my experience and from one of my Black Belt’s experience that could be useful to you.
Instead of talking about a specific type of job I focus on a mindset and prioritization
Hopefully after watching the video you’ll have some ideas on what you could do but then also how you could adapt the ideas for your own life and training.
By the way, when I say 25k in sponsorships. I sort of misspoke. It’s more along the lines of over 25k in training opportunities and experiences. This number is since 2016 and is a combination of seminars (many of which I give away free to the students so they have a chance to train with high level people), flights, fees for competitions, dinners for coaches, gatherings and parties for students and even some free memberships for students who hit tough times but still wanted to train.

Today’s BJJ Q&A video comes from a Brown Belt who asked a question back when he was a Blue Belt competitor. Today’s question isn’t about a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu competition and more about social dynamics with being promoted in our martial art.
I explain the situation in the video about him wondering if he could have multiple BJJ coaches be involved with promoting him to a BJJ Black Belt.
In the video I share 2 stories that may be useful. 1 was where I was a part of a co-promotion. The other is situation where I have 2 students who don’t get promoted by me.
Hopefully the video helps you if you’re in a similar situation?

Recently I got a question regarding Sport BJJ and Self-Defense. The question was from someone who doesn’t train Brazilian Jiu-jitsu yet. And they said that they didn’t understand why you practice a sport BJJ style technique for an art that prides itself on self-defense.
In this video I share some ideas on why people in Jiu-jitsu practice sport style techniques even though it may not be the best option for self-defense.
I also share why in a lot of cases what keeps people training is not the self-defense techniques but rather the connection to people formed through the sport training.
Again, this is my opinion and experience. If you’ve been training for a long time you’re more than welcome to share yours in the comments below.

In this video I reply to a bunch of comments that I’ve received recently and just answer them off the cuff.
In the video I reply to a comment about leavining your ego at the door.
What I thought about the recent Rodolfo Viera fight.
Why high level belts take it easy on White Belts. So If you submit one, they’re probably taking it easy on them.
How I improved my knee health.
And what kind of comments I’ll delete from the channel.
I also mention the info about the Chew Crew youtube membership offered on the channel now for .99 cents.
Hope you enjoy the video.

In today’s video I share a powerful armbar that I’ve been using during BJJ training for the last 6-7 months. The armlock is also super sneaky because it doesn’t use the normal grips of most armbars in Jiu-jitsu. I also show some details on how to hide your grips a bit. Again, the purpose is to use different grips that the person is unfamiliar with so they don’t feel it coming. . . until it’s too late.
In Brazilian Jiu-jitsu I call this idea “flying under the radar” and use it whenever I can. You can breathe new life into BJJ techniques simply by changing the grips you use to set it up.
This will be the 1st video to start an ongoing armlock series from side control that you follow on the channel. This is one of the areas I’ve been working on personally so I figured I’d share some of the things that have been working for me.
If you’d like to learn more about the series join the wait list here: https://www.chewjitsutraining.com/Arms-Race-Signup
Hope the technique and ideas are useful to you.
Thanks for watching.

Today’s Q&A Chewy Ramble video I answer a question from a Purple Belt named Nick who’s moving into the role as an assistant coach. He says his game is focused on sweeping but he knows he needs to teach other things to his students so they can progress.
So his question to me is about how to teach moves you’re uncomfortable with as a new Brazilian Jiu-jitsu coach.
In this video I give some ideas as to how I teach and how I taught as a new BJJ coach. How I show techniques I’m not the best with but how they’re still useful to the students. I also talk about the ideas and usefulness of having a rotating curriculum as well as some general philosophies on being a coach in Jiu-jitsu.
