Today I’ll be responding to the backlash towards recent ADCC Veteran, Brandon Reed, for his success at IBJJF No-Gi Pans (Purple Belt).
Brandon, my student, who has been training just a little over 3 years in BJJ won the tournament along with Michael Pixley, which stirred up a lot of conversation and a video response by Brandon, to said controversy.
Here’s his video:
I’ll give my take on the situation & address the reality of Brandon’s Jiu-Jitsu experience and his recent competition result. I’ll also explain WHY he has not gotten his brown belt yet.
Thanks for watching.

Recently I posted a video talking about the “let’s go light guy” in Jiu-Jitsu gyms.
Watch it here: https://youtu.be/xKBWrwA2Cdg
Everyone, if you train in Jiu-Jitsu, will have the “let’s go light” conversation that leads into a World Championship level roll (as far as intensity).
This can be extremely frustrating.
Many of you guys commented on that previously mentioned video, saying that you have had the experience. But some of you commented that you are the person who actually does ask the question, however they actually keep their word.
So, how do you approach actually rolling light, after asking the question? and how can rolling light be an effective tool to help you get better faster and help you heal in the midst of an injury caused by BJJ?
I’ll talk about this and more in the video.
Thanks for watching.

What’s up guys,
I’ve got a question from one of my Jiu-Jitsu email list Chew crew Subscribers named Matt who asked:
He was curious about catching and almost releasing when applying submissions and developing positions.
Catch & Almost Release is a concept I use to help level up my own chain submission attacks in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and one that I have my students work too.
Matt was curious if I could give some specific examples to help clarify the point, so that’s what I’ll do.
If you train BJJ then you will probably find this idea helpful.
Thanks for watching.

So, today, we’ve got a question from Matt, a 4-stripe white belt and a big boy who says he prefers pressure passing.
He says he’s experiencing an obstacle though.
According to his coaches, he’s not using as much pressure as he could, and the main reason is that he’s worried about hurting his training partners.
He doesn’t use pressure, explosiveness, or dynamic movements because he’s the big guy in the room. He’s worried this makes him overly defensive, passive, and soft.
He asked what the best way was to change his thinking about going hard, upping the intensity, and lowering the injury risk while training Jiu-Jitsu as a bigger person.
I’ll give you guys a couple ideas to chew on when in relation to being a big guy doing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in a room full of smaller training partners.
Hopefully, you find them helpful.
Thanks for watching.

MASTER 1 / BLACK-BELT / FEMALE / LIGHT-FEATHER – SEMIFINAL
Today’s question comes from “Bob”
He says that a year ago he opened up a new gym, and in the past year his BJJ gym has had a ton of cross-training/visitors.
The issue though, is that Bob hears a lot of trash talk about himself and his newer gym in his Jiu-Jitsu community.
Specifically, these insults are coming from other Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gym owners and coaches. He asks whether or not I’ve dealt with something like this, and if so, how did I address it?
Hopefully, you find this video helpful Bob.

Recently I did a video where I talked about the curse of the lazy guard player, basically when someone only plays guard and they’re one dimensional.
I got a message from a Big Fella who says he has the opposite issue.
He says he’s a 6ft 2, 255lbs, heavyweight, with a good top game, emphasizing side control. The issue is he sucks on his back.
He wonders what the best types of guards are for bigger, less athletic heavyweights.
In this video I’ll give him 3 suggestions for guards I would recommend for my bigger, less flexible, students in BJJ.
Hopefully, you found this video helpful.
Thanks for watching.

Today, we’ve got a question from AverageAarron, who is dealing with one of the many Ego battles that those of us who do BJJ often face.
This is true for the entire run of our Jiu-Jitsu careers.
He trained BJJ for 4 months, competed, got Gold in No-Gi, and 3rd in the Gi. He said there were tons of benefits from the comp like an adrenaline high, he’s calmer, and has a better gas tank.
Here’s the problem…
He says he can’t shake this feeling of expectation even though he’s competing at a local master’s tournament.
I’ll dive deep into my own experiences with comp and how I would attack this Ego battle in BJJ.
