In this video I show a simple way to use the Ankle Pick in BJJ to counter stiff arm grips with the gi.
If you’ve ever been in the middle of a good match then you know the grips can get really frustrating to deal with.
In this video I answer a question from our friend who says that when he rolls from the feet his opponent’s are just using a straight stiff arm to keep away. It makes his ability to do takedowns difficult.
His question goes on to ask about how to do an ankle pick using the kimono in Brazilian Jiujitsu.
So in this video I share one of my favorite ankle pick variations.
Keep in mind there are a ton of variations to the ankle pick. And when you add the gi into the mix there are even more!
But this simple variation is a good way to counter the grips we discuss in the video.
So whether it’s for your BJJ training in the gym or the opening move of your upcoming BJJ competition. I hope this technique serves you and your takedown game well!

In today’s video I take you guys along one of my boring ole Mondays haha.
Mondays are my usually my day of the week where I am doing meetings and a lot of boring stuff. They’re a pretty busy day but there is some BJJ training squeezed in there.
Hopefully you enjoyed the video and if you’d like to see more, please leave a comment below.

Are you a gym owner and want to ask Chewy or Joe a gym business related question? Please leave the questions below.
Recently I’ve been getting a ton of gym business related questions from BJJ coaches. But also from people running other niche gyms.
And I figured I’d do some videos on the topics from time to time.
But at the same time I wanted to introduce you to my business partner Joe.
In our business he covers many of my gaps and does things that I am terrible with and vice versa. We work together as a team on our gym to make it an awesome place to train.
We’re a nearly 9000 sq ft facility with Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, Boxing, Kickboxing, Weight lifting and more.
And the gym is packed everyday.
It wasn’t always this way and we’ve learned a lot of stuff over the years that we hope to share with you.
If you’re a gym owner or maybe want to be but have a question. Leave it in the comments or send it to me privately and Joe and I will answer it sometime in the future.

In today’s video I answer a question about BJJ training from our friend who is a Blue Belt in BJJ. He says that he enjoys rolling with the higher ranking belts inside his gym because they are a bit safer.
But the issue there is that he is almost always playing pure defense.
He enjoys rolling with the white belts and less experienced people because he can execute some offensive techniques. But the issue with them is that they aren’t as safe as the higher ranks.
So his question boils down to this. Do you have to train with white belts and less experienced people in Brazilian Jiujitsu, of can you just roll with the higher ones?
In my experience it’s good to have a mix, as I’ll explain in the video.
Against higher ranking belts you learn what good Jiu-jitsu feels like and you begin to zero in on your defense.
But it’s still important to focus some of your rolling attention on people less skilled than you. Because against these people you get a chance to play around with more offensive based techniques.
In this video I share a story from my experience with a friend who got way way better at Brazilian Jiu-jitsu once we had new people in the gym to train with.
Hope you enjoyed the video!
