Recently I had 2018 IBJJF World Champ Mahamed Aly out to our gym to train and do some videos.
In this video Mahamed focused his attention to White Belts defending armbars. So in this video we show an armbar escape.
He said when he was a White Belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu he didn’t want to tap and would get his arm popped all the time. He’d leave training with sore arms.
So to help White Belts and any Brazilian Jiujitsu practitioner with their ability to survive. He shows a slick armbar defense.
If you’re struggling with defending armbars then I hope this video is useful for you!
Being able to defend submissions is the focus of anyone who is new to BJJ.
Hope you enjoyed the video and I’ll see you next time!

Do I set New Years resolutions? This is the question I got recently.
I originally answered this question on my email list. And the big idea that I shared was about how I break down goals.
Here’s what I mean. . .
For me, I tend to be a little bit hyper and all over the place. If you’ve watch the videos sometimes I have a tendency to speak quickly and all over the place.
This energy is great. But sometimes it causes me to lose sight of my goals.
But back in 2016. I thought about all the things I’m good at in my life. Like weight training, Brazilian jiu-jitsu the gym business, teaching, etc. And when I thought about them. I realized that they were all things that I did everyday.
So when 2016 New Years rolled around. I set my goals and then started to look at daily things I could do to make those goals happen.
While I certainly didn’t hit every goal. I hit more goals than I had ever hit before.
And I’m sure if you talked to my business partner Joe. He’d tell you that there was a change in me around this time. I became much more focused and better at completing projects we had for the business.
So while I don’t have everything figured out. I have found a huge value in focusing on simple daily tasks / daily rituals to make the big goals happen.
I wanted to share, and I hope it’s useful for you.

Does your BJJ belt lineage really matter if you plan to teach?
Of course this is my opinion, but assuming that your belt lineage is legitimate. I really don’t think it matters as many people think.
As a young coach who was a brown belt. I had an obscure Brazilian Jiu-jitsu lineage for most. But I was still able to be successful in competitions and as a coach.
I’ve grown a gym that’s nearly 10000 sq ft and has hundreds of people training.
I accomplished this not with my really cool belt lineage. But because I was very much invested in the success of my students and my drive to help them.
Now, all that said, I think lineage can be important in a few cases. But if you’re someone who is looking to become a Brazilian Jiujitsu coach or instructor.
I think your belt lineage is less important when compared to who you are as a person and how you teach your students.
