I too spend time online looking at techniques from all sorts of people. I believe it is important to keep yourself up to date with all the latest happenings, and see where improvements and innovations can be made.

I had recently demonstrated a rolling knee bar from being the top man in a turtle position utilizing a wrestling leg hook, and I came across a video from BJJScout using that same hook here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hMhLL7Qrg8

I didn’t realize that the name of that hook was the “Merkle,” or that it could be used as a sweep from the knees or standing!

So in this video, I made some modifications to show you how you can use it in BJJ or MMA. Of course, I added some submission options such as the Bully Choke, the Knee Bar, or a Texas Clover Leaf. This position would also give you the opportunity to take the back or at the very least get a dominant top position. Check it out!

It sounds silly but breathing is so important to our cardio. Ok, it is silly. Of course, it is. But how often during the strenuous parts of a roll do we just plain forget and hold our breath. When we exercise our strength and find ourselves holding our breath. This is a recipe to gas out…and when you are really, really tired your Jiu Jitsu suffers and suffers badly. But there is no need. Watch this video as I discuss some super easy techniques you can use right away to improve your breathing and improve your cardio. Give it a try. Let me know how it goes

So someone has you in mount – do you have an escape plan? do you have a methodology that works? that helps against that person that holds you in super tight? or perhaps that guy that is spread wide and perhaps a bit loose – so you just can’t seem to budge him / can’t bridge and roll him. Well, this video is for you. Here are two moves, when used together will get you out of mount (nearly) every single time. Watch the video, try it on the mat. And let me know how you go.

You won’t get the same guy more than a couple of times with this submission, but the I-want-to-burn-my-gi look on their face after you pull it off makes it totally worthwhile!

Now your opponent is doing all the right things. They are countering your cutting armbar technique the most effective way possible. But that is fine, that just opens them up for a sweep and guess what. You hold on to the arm – you still have the option to go for the cutting armbar again. Or a straight armbar. Or a number of other submissions. I hope you like this video and have enjoyed the cutting armbar series. If you have any questions please ask. Sometimes when you are going for the cutting armbar from the bottom your opponent pushes down low and presses towards the ground. Perhaps you have not placed your knee in as a protection against this defense…but no problem, you can move straight into the Kimura! Watch as I demonstrate this move, I think you will like it.
