Rotator Cuff Strengthening Variation To Build Healthy Shoulders For BJJ
This video is part of my soon to be released video e-book on Shoulder Health For BJJ. Its basically the exercises from my e-book in video format. This exercise is a progression of the basic rotator cuff strengthening exercise where the arm is at your side.
This variation is especially important to build healthy shoulders for grapplers and pretty much everyone.
Kimuras, Americanas, and Omoplatas are a few of the submissions that will attack the shoulders in this position of the arm and could compromise and injure the shoulder joint as well as the rotator cuff musculature.
These exercises are a way to help protect the shoulders, build essential strength to promote optimal shoulder function, and also prevent injury.
Doing these exercises does not mean that you should not tap from a submission or get your shoulder cranked, its always a smart idea to tap in order to prevent injury and continue training. But if your shoulder gets compromised and you are late to tap or the submission comes on quicker than expected, then these exercises can help reduce the risk of injury.
This is just one peice of the puzzle to have healthy shoulders, and is a great addition to an already solid healthy shoulder program.
If you are wondering how to get healthy shoulders, then check out my free e-book available now at www.jiujitsutherapist.com and request your free copy today!

Use Less Strength and Make Your BJJ Collar Chokes Tighter
Whether you’re using collar chokes, lapel chokes or any sort of choke that uses the gi in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
The focus is the same. Create pressure on the carotids using the fabric either directly against the neck or to support the hands.
In this BJJ technique video you’ll see Adam and I sharing a drink of bourbon. But beyond that we dive into a few tips when using a Baseball Choke.
You can watch a more in depth Baseball Choke video here:
This question comes from Titus who is struggling hitting the choke asked for some tips.
In this video I give specific tips on how to improve the Baseball choke
but also how to make any Brazilian Jiujitsu collar choke tighter by focusing more on the wrist.
I’ve found that this is one of the most important details.
I used to struggle with collar chokes because I was using the wrong part of my body. The arms. When I began to focus on the wrists and the push with them.
It dramatically improved.
So if you’re struggling to finish your collar chokes in BJJ practice or competitions and want to make them tighter. Give the tips in this video a try!
I hope it helps.

http://teachmegrappling.com This video demonstrates a reversal I call the “Wedding Sweep”. This is the fourth video showing the entry coming from being mounted. When your opponent mounts and goes to a “technical mount” when you turn to your side and threatened guard replacement… go double under and the wedding sweep is a great followup! There are other wedding sweep videos in the series to check out for more info! Check out the details and you are sure to find something useful! Enjoy! I Can’t Accept my BJJ Purple Belt Promotion (I’m Not Ready)
What do you do when you feel like you’re not ready for your BJJ promotion?
This is the question I got from Matt who is a 50 year old Blue Belt and was recently informed that he would be up for his promotion to Purple Belt.
In most cases this would be a good thing. But as soon as Matt was informed about his potential promotion. He instantly began to have feelings of doubt in himself.
He says that he’s in pretty good shape. But being 50 years old is tough in BJJ. And he struggles rolling with the younger, stronger practitioners even if they’re less experienced.
In this video I go through and share the idea of imposter syndrome. Where we feel like we’re faking it or that we aren’t good enough. I also share how at every single belt I was promoted to I had the same feelings of inadequacy in relation to my Brazilian Jiu-jitsu abilities.
Jordan Peterson talks about this in his recent book that we are tyrants to ourselves. Someone else could make the same mistake as us. But since we made it, we’ve very hard and judgmental.
Nothing wrong with pushing yourself to be better. But at the same time there has to be a limit.
If you’re struggling with being your own worst critic. I hope the video helps!

A More Powerful Way To Pummel From Over Under
Pretty much everyone who trains has pummeled before. Usually during warm ups, where it is more of a dance than it is a technique. 🙂
The likelihood of you using that flowing style of pummeling against a resisting opponent is close to nil – at least from my experience.
Instead, I like to use a more powerful pummel. I actually learned this particular variation from former UFC Champion and MMA legend Tito Ortiz. It involves using your hips to bump your opponent as you jack up your under hook, which is going to put your opponent off balance and create a pocket for your to pummel in with. Heck, even if you don’t get the double under hooks, you could trap the arm and still be as effective (arguably more if you slam them on that side and they can’t post).
To finish it off, I use the knee reap for the take down. It is low risk, high reward, and minimal effort with a lot of chain sequences to build off of.
