Ever struggle with remembering Brazilian Jiu-jitsu techniques? If you’re like most of us, then I’m sure you have. Especially early on. And this is the main topic for today’s question that comes from Sarah who’s a White Belt and can’t seem to remember all the techniques from her BJJ Classes.
So, in the video I share some ideas on why not being able to retain each technique you learn is normal and why it’s not even necessary for being good at BJJ. Sure, overtime you’ll remember more and more of them. But it’s not like forgetting a couple of techniques you don’t use will break your ability to be a good BJJ practitioner. In particular I share a story from my high school wrestling days that illustrates why, and why I never got too worried when I didn’t remember each technique when I was coming up.
Hope the video is useful to you!

When you first start Jiu Jitsu, you’re gonna be getting stuck in the bottom of mount. A lot. Even by people who aren’t very good yet lol
Take these 3 simple movements and add them to your game so you can give yourself a better chance of getting back to a winning position.

A good wrestler may be able to sense you are trying to Switch them and circle with you as you try to sit through. You will end up in what is known in wrestling as the Sit Out.
Because in MMA and BJJ we can choke, we have to make sure we keep control of our opponent’s tight waist hand so they don’t get any ideas of choking us. We can then go into a Hip Heist, a classic escape from the Sit Out.
But if that proves ineffective, we can stand up and go into a Standing Switch – which is a powerful way of breaking a back body lock position.

Sometimes family can betray you, and in this case it does so with no remorse. When we are getting Switched, just as we limp our arm out, instead of letting them lock on a Kimura, you lock on a Kimura on their arm, hooking your leg and roll through. It will be you that steals their momentum and lands in the Kimura TV position in the driver’s seat.

In today’s 1 Minute Jiu Jitsu Hack, we cover the basic 3 rules for Ground and Pound by 10th Planet Decatur MMA coach, Matt Elkins.
Striking is an important, though often overlooked, part of BJJ. Make sure you’re thinking about strikes in your training; especially if you have MMA or Combat Jiu Jitsu (CJJ) aspirations.

As I mentioned before, the Switch and the Kimura are related. In this case, we can go from a Switch to a Kimura. We do so the moment we feel our opponent release our hip to limp arm out, switching out to the Kimura grip quickly as we fall back and turn our chest into them as our hips scoot out.
Ideally, we would like to have a reverse half guard, but even if both your legs are outside, you can just hook over the top. While you might not be able to finish the Kimura in this position, the moment they roll through you will land in the Kimura TV position and be ready to attack.
