Back finishes are high percentage.
At the highest levels, they work more often than not, and once someone gets to your back, staying safe is a true battle.
Here’s one method for improving your ability to survive and escape.

I’ve added some adjustments here and there, but all credit for helping me see this possibility goes to Gustavo Batista in his matches against Renato Cardoso and Lucas Lepri.
Since I saw those matches, I’ve been obsessed, and I’ve been hitting every one with this sweep.
It’s so good that I don’t even grip the cross collar anymore unless I’m working on something other than the scissor sweep.

Pulled this one out of the archives of micro adjustments.
The focus is on one of the tactics you can use when opponents pull away from a sleeve drag in closed guard. It’s not a situation to be frustrated about. In fact, their pull away can actually lead to all kinds of offensive options.
And it all starts with locking on the reverse kimura grip.

Knowing how to defend, escape, and counter the heel hook leglock attack is super important. In this excerpt from https://www.grapplearts.com/modern BJJ black belts Matt Kwan and Rob Biernacki show how the berimbolo can be applied to defend and even counterattack the heel hook when your opponent has you in ‘ashi garami’, the most common and popular entanglement for leglocks. The berimbolo isn’t just a guard attack – it can be used to escape many different situations in both gi and no gi grappling.
Years ago, I learned a loop choke counter to the over under pass from a video that Bernardo Faria did with Jason Eames.
It’s something that I immediately added to my game. I caught countless people with it, and I’ve taught it as well. But lately I’ve been exploring alternative setups, and this is the result.
To see the video that I learned the original choke from, go here:

Known by many names like the Wilson pass, the Tozi pass, and the Chim pass, the Sao Paolo pass is one that I first tried to add to my arsenal back when I was a blue belt.
I ran into all kinds of difficulties with it, but over the years, I came back to it time and time again with new adjustments, but recently I stumbled on one that may just change everything for the better.
It’s just a small difference in grip placement that I learned from a video that Leo Nogueira did on the topic in a video with Bernardo Faria.
And this video delved is into exactly what that adjustment is and why it matters.

Staying safe in the closed guard is hard. There’s all kinds of threats like cross chokes, scissor sweeps, and kimuras just to name a few. These simple rules for white belts can help though.

Stopped in to train with one of my friends today, and after the class, we had a short brainstorming about the art. Things of note were some discussion of half guard frame experimentation, loop choke details, playing butterfly guard and controlling the lasso.

Once you get the overhook in closed guard, the first battle you have to fight is for angle, and that can be lost at times. If that happens, though, it’s not the end of the world. In fact, it might lead to some offensive possibilities like this bad boy right here. Give it a try.

The whole idea of rotational control when it comes to the knee cut pass has been revolutionary for me. And now that I’m also exploring the idea of crowding the space, the technique is going to whole ‘nother level.
