I don’t always play my trombone at work, but when I do, it’s for a great reason! Sofiya is one of the many amazing people in our #community and this week she celebrated her 100th birthday! Sofiya is a WWII Veteran who was in her 20’s when the Nazi’s invaded Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) where she lived in 1941. The “Siege of Leningrad” lasted almost 3 years and almost 1 million people lost their lives during that time. Thank you Sofiya for letting us celebrate with you. 👏🏽🎂 🎉

I graduated from the @uhmanoanews 20 years ago with my Bachelors of Arts in Psychology. It took me almost 2 years longer than it was supposed to because I was on academic suspension for a semester due to bad grades. I had a tuition waiver for music but I clearly took it for granted and there was a chance I wouldn’t graduate. That was a difficult time because a lot of my friends were in college and I had to figure out what I was going to do. The only connection to school I had during that semester off was music. Mr. Thomas Bingham was nice enough to let me play in his band class (including the concert) even though I wasn’t technically enrolled. That connection to school really helped motivate me to come back and eventually graduate. A tradition for the marching band was to play the “Rainbow Closer” at halftime of the last home game of the season. It was a medley of Somewhere Over the Rainbow, which I was told was a favorite tune of his. I heard Mr. Bingham retired in July after more than 40 years of teaching, 35 of those years at UH Mānoa. #Mahalo Mr. Bingham! Gun versus unarmed person on the ground with @kai_ozeki & @sampson.mz. In some ways you are fighting with only one arm because you cannot grab or establish frames with the hand that is holding the gun. If you are stuck on the bottom of the fight, incorporating your legs and using them as wedges helps a lot but there are still no guarantees. I met @kai_ozeki several years ago when he began his combat sports journey as a boxer with @ring_sports_united. He later took up #jiujitsu and now he also wrestles for his high school. From our city’s winter shelter to college! Every time I get to chat with this family I am reminded of the power of the human spirit. 🙏🏽🇺🇸🤙🏽Posted @withregram • @bellevuewapolicerecruiting This family of five moved to our state to escape a domestic violence situation six years ago. We met them at one of our winter shelters during our periodic walk-throughs, and we kept in touch when they were placed into transitional housing in our #community. With help from our officers and our friends we were able to fully furnish the apartment they were placed in that year. They left our city a few years later and returned again last year, again staying at one of our shelters. We were happy to hear they were placed in housing again, and through incredible donations from people in our community, we were able to get them a bunk bed frame, several books, and a refurbished desktop computer! Since we last saw them, the two oldest in this incredible family are now attending college hoping to get into counseling or social work! We had to ask for advice on how they were able to persevere in spite of the obstacles that life presented them. Their answer in part was, “You can think about where you came from, but don’t keep looking back. Just keep looking forward.” We have no doubt they will continue to do amazing things because of that mindset.
