How to maintain focus during BJJ class.
Here’s an important White Belt BJJ advice: prioritize controlling dominant positions and gradually wear down opponents instead of rushing for submissions, which often results in losing position altogether. #bjjwhitebelt #bjjtips

The skill set of grip fighting off of your back is absolutely essential to being able to stop your opponents passes and establish your own guard to attack from. All attacks come from a position so before developing attacks its critical that you know how to defend and establish positions well. This video I go through the foundations of defending and establishing grips when on your back.

The idea for this video came from a conversation with one of the white belts at the gym. His question was about where to start or what to focus on from various positions.
When I started training over 10 years ago, instructional videos were very limited and the youtube library of techniques was not at all what it is today.
My go-to way for studying was books because that was the way I was used to learning. Reading, highlighting, underlining, and taking notes…so thats why I was drawn to books.
The one book that I recommend for all beginners is “Jiu-Jitsu University” by BJJ black belt and multiple time world champion Saulo Ribeiro.
This book was a vital resource for me starting out and has details from many positions including proper positions/posture, sweeps, submissions, and a bunch more.
If you’re a beginner, I recommend picking up the book.

In this video I take a step-by-step approach to improve the “Bump Sweep” for BJJ.
My training partner was having difficulty with generating the power needed for this sweep to more more effectively.
I demonstrate a stretch to open up the hips followed by a few really important techniques to help fire up the glutes and hips as well as to keep the knee safe when performing this technique in order to improve the effectiveness of the sweep.

A basic concept that is extremely useful for injury prevention by limiting overuse injuries, improving your BJJ, and improving longevity in the body is known as “rotating the tires.”
This is not anything new but its a great concept to think about as it can force your opponent into a position or side they aren’t as comfortable from, it will distribute the load on your body and help maintain symmetry, and it will limit overuse injuries.
Simple and effective. Give it a try!
