Today we’ve got a question from Raq, who has a situation where he’s got a new job, his first “big boy job”, and his parents & intuition are telling him that he can NOT turn this job down.
The issue is that he loves Jiu-Jitsu, it’s changed his life, and he loves what Jiu-Jitsu has done for him, transforming him from a young, out-of-shape kid to a tougher, more confident man.
He wants to continue training, but because of the new work schedule, he has no chance to train BJJ.
He asks for suggestions for training like private lessons, but he’s open to any ideas.
I had a very similar situation one time in my life, so I’ll try to explain to you guys how I dealt with that, and more.
Hopefully, you found this video helpful. Thanks for watching.

3X World Champion Otavio Sousa makes his return to big competitions after 3 years away. Watch Sousa battle his way through the biggest master’s division tournament in the world.
Today we’ve got a question from Shawn, who was recently offered a coaching position at his gym.
The problem is this…
He’s apprehensive about accepting the job because he fears that this coaching situation will rob him of his passion for Jiu-Jitsu.
He essentially doesn’t want BJJ to be his “job”.
He was offered to coach 1 day a week and asked how I do BJJ, but don’t turn it into work or don’t let it burn me out.
This question comes up a ton, I’ve been teaching BJJ full time since 2010, I love it, enjoy doing it, and it wasn’t easy.
I’ll share 1 of my biggest reasons for choosing this occupation and what keeps me around.
I’ll also dive deeper into this idea of internal and external rewards that come from this line of work and hopefully, if you’re a BJJ coach in the making, then you found this video helpful.
Thanks for watching.

Today we’ve got a question from Corey, who is being labeled as a “Sandbagger” in his gym.
He says he’s been training Jiu-Jitsu, on again/off again, for 2 years, and so far, he’s just a 2-stripe white belt.
Recently, lots of his training partners and coaches are telling him he’s ready for Blue Belt. At the same time, his head coach has not talked about this at all.
On top of that, at the recent belt promotions he did NOT get a Blue Belt, in fact, he didn’t even get another stripe on his White Belt.
So, he’s at a loss, because he doesn’t want people to have hard feelings towards him, because being labeled a sandbagger in BJJ is not the best thing to be called.
However, he doesn’t know how to approach his coach about the subject, because he personally does not care much about his belt color or rank.
He asked what I think about the issue & what advice I could give on the subject.
Thanks for watching.

I recently listened to the Lex Fridman podcast with Craig Jones, and they brought up the idea of “Seminar Snipers” at BJJ seminars.
The clip is included in the video.
Craig talks about confronting injury threats on your own as an instructor in different Brazilian Jiu-jitsu gyms. The idea is not to injure someone for no reason, but just in self-defense.
You can listen to the full podcast episode here:
Anyways, often when it comes time for the class & visiting BJJ instructor to roll, there’s sometimes people who feel like they have something to prove.
This person usually tends to be very spazzy & dangerous with the instructor.
I wanted to dive into this unfortunate situation and talk about some unwritten rules, and how I deal with and approach rolling at seminars, especially as a 39-year-old BJJ coach who does NOT want to go to war every day.
Hopefully, you found this video helpful. Thanks for watching.

This past weekend at the ADCC & CJI events I met a lot of you guys who were new gym owners.
One constant issue that I heard younger gym owners running into was, especially if you were a competitor, was this:
You feel driven to improve your students’ skills but don’t want to let your own skills worsen.
So most young coaches run into this dichotomy of self-improvement & selflessness in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Today I’ll try to give my best solution to this problem, and if you’re a young coach then I hope you found these ideas in this video helpful.
Thanks for watching.
