Today’s question is about getting a medal for losing all your matches in a BJJ competition. The question comes from a guy who was in a 3-man division, lost both of his matches and got a 3rd place medal.

He said that when the medal was offered to him, he didn’t accept it. He didn’t feel like he earned it. And he sent the question to me about whether or not he did the “right” thing by not accepting the medal.

So I chat about the idea, briefly, about participation medals in BJJ competitions and why I think his decision was better than the 1 that many people make when they become too attached to medals and trophies.

One of the questions I’ve been asked a bunch recently is whether or not you can get promoted in BJJ if you only do No Gi. This question is coming about more and more as people decide to focus more on No Gi training rather than the gi.

So in this video I share some ideas on promoting people in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu who choose to focus on No Gi training. I’ll also share how I do things at my gym and my thought process behind it. One of which is that I require gis to be worn for belt promotions.

Professor Bruno Bastos commented on the divisions he’s most looking forward to watching and also on the black belt open class finals.

Paulo and Joao Miyao competed at the 2022 Worlds No-Gi in the Master 1 light-feather division. They commented on the event and the evolution of their competition games.

Jacob Couch won the brown belt heavyweight division at the 2022 Worlds N-Gi and received his black belt on the podium. Hear his reaction after an amazing day of competing.

Recently one of my students said he saw a post that was rating BJJ youtube channels. Out of curiosity I asked what my was rated as. He said it was a B. The reason I was not rated as an A is because. . .

#1 I talk too much.
#2 I don’t do enough rolling videos.

So in this video I share why I don’t post many rolling videos on the channel even though I’m on the mats no less than 5 days a week. Now I will be posting some rolling footage from time to time in a new format and only when I have something that I think could be useful to share with others as a learning experience.

How can a BJJ hobbyist who competes somewhat often prepare for a professional grappler? This is the basic question I received from a viewer who is a competitor in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is but is still by all means a “hobbyist.” Meaning he has a job off the mats and can only devote 3 days a week or so to training.

This is opposed to a professional who might do BJJ all the time and competes often.

So in this video I give a mindset that could be useful to you if you ever find yourself in a situation where, on paper, you’re supposed to lose or are seemingly outmatched. This kind of situation could spook you at 1st. But I’m going to explain why it could make your BJJ even better by opening up a new mindset in you.

Today’s BJJ video comes from a situation I was talking about with 1 of my students recently. It’s a simple idea of making what I call a “tactical retreat” to a lesser position. In the video I explain this idea and how many BJJ White Belts or lower belts (although some higher belts do it too), try and hang onto a dominant position too long. Even after the main points of control have been lost.

This leads to a situation where the opponent is then able to potentially gain the upper hand. I personally made this mistake a ton early on in my Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training and competitions.

So, in the video I’ll show some general ideas on this strategy from mount, back mount and side control.

World NoGi history! Who remembers this awesome back and forth open class semifinal match between Gordon Ryan and Patrick Gaudio from the 2018 World NoGi?
