Do you ever panic when you’re stuck in the bottom of side control? This is the issue that Bob is having.
Bob says he is the smallest person in his gym and gets stuck in the bottom of side control. And while he knows techniques to escape, he panics and cannot seem to recall the techniques because he panics.
His question is how to address this issue during his Brazilian Jiujitsu training.
In this video I discuss a couple of simple ideas and a tip to work on getting away from the panic mindset that often grips people when they are still new to Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
The tip is pretty simple but will take a good deal of discipline to use it effectively.
The tip is to roll with some of your partners, and essentially let them pass and put you in a bad position like the bottom of side control. And once they are there. . . don’t try to escape.
Instead. . .
Just stay tight and don’t let them submit you. And see how long you can last. The purpose of doing this is that it will give you more time in the position. And more time in the position equals more comfort and less panic.
Once you get comfortable in bad spots, it makes it easier to relax, not panic, and use your techniques more effectively and efficiently.
I also discuss how I used this in my own training as well as how I’ve used this with my BJJ students to get them to be more effective with their escapes.
I hope this BJJ escape tip helps with your side control escapes!

What should you do with your old gym patches if you move to a new city and are training Brazilian Jiu-jitsu at a new gym?
In this video I say that you will need to consult your instructor 1st and foremost. Because with some instructors. It can be a very sensitive subject with some BJJ instructors and coaches.
But along with that advice I share my personal philosophy on the idea of patches and why you should keep your old gym patches on your gi if you move. As long as you want to continue to be associated with that coach.
To me, BJJ coaches give a piece of themselves to their students through the physical exertion of training.
And I consider that a powerful thing. And because of that, as long as you still respect and value your previous coach, I see nothing wrong with paying homage to them and their teaching through the wearing of a patch.
In my gym I still have images of Renato Tavares inside our walls. Even though I am no longer a part of his affiliation. I have a great deal of respect for him. When I left the association he was very respectful and not even the slightest bit angry towards me. And I appreciate his understanding.
Along with that. I learned a lot from Renato and so I keep the images up in our gym as a reminder of where I came from.
So if you’re changing gyms, or moving, I hope this video is helpful in some way.
Btw . . . why couldn’t I say trenches that day. Haha.

Strong Grips in BJJ can be frustrating or a lot of fun depending on whether or not you are the one that has them or know how to deal with them.
Recently I got asked a question about the common lapel grip used when breaking Full Guard. Basically our friend Will is unable to remove the lapel grip and his opponent’s are able to break and pass his guard.
His question was simply about how to disable the lapel grip.
But as is usually with me and my answers to Brazilian Jiu-jitsu questions. I tend to be a little long winded and bounce around all over the place.
So in addition to showing a solid grip break that will stop the top person’s guard break. I also show how you can use it to setup a number of different attacks from a very strong offensive position from Guard.
From the position I show a basic straight armlock a long with a sweep.
So if you’re having trouble with that particular guard break or just the grips. I hope that this grip break and attacking position is useful for you in your Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training or competitions.

When you first start BJJ training, it can be overwhelming. There is so much going on and it’s confusing about where to start.
I experienced this issue when I began training. And it is a question one of my new White Belts named Taylor had a question about.
His question was essentially asking what to focus on as a new BJJ White Belt.
So in this video, I share several tips about how I personally went about Brazilian Jiu-jitsu as a brand new White Belt with little to no submissions in my useable technique arsenal.
I share some tips for people who are more comfortable on the bottom playing form Full Guard and I share some options for people who are more comfortable playing from the top positions.
The general idea in this video is that if you’re new to Brazilian Jiujitsu. Your goal should be to just be able to control position as best you can and survive initially.
If you can control the basic positions (holding full guard, maintaining top position, etc) then overtime you’ll find that you’ll be able to mount some sort of offense attacks afterwards.
But in the beginning, if you don’t have the ability to maintain positions properly. You’ll be hard pressed to mount any submission attacks or offense techniques.
So for all the newcomers to BJJ, I hope this video is useful to you!

The Over Under Pass has been one of my favorite Guard Passes to use in Bjj since I was a late White Belt, early Blue Belt.
I originally watch competitors like Pablo Popovitch use it successfully and I wanted to try and incorporate the Guard Pass into my top game arsenal.
Initially, I found a lot of issues with the pass. And often this guard pass got me submitted early on. I would get caught in Kimuras, Triangle chokes and often the pass just didn’t seem to work.
Overtime, and lots of mistakes, I was able to develop the ability to use the Over Under Pass in my Brazilian Jiujitsu training and competitions. Now I love it.
In this video, I answer a question I received from Twitter about tips with the Over Under Guard pass in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
I share a few basic tips on finishing the pass itself. But much of the video is me discussing a lot of the mistakes I made when I initially began using the pass in BJJ.
If you’re trying to add this versatile option into your Guard Passing techniques. I hope the tips in this video help you avoid some of the common mistakes.

Do you ever get to Back Mount in BJJ but are unable to finish the choke because someone is gripping onto your gi and you’re unable to free your other hand?
This is a common issue with Brazilian Jiu-jitsu in the gi. Recently one of the viewers, Nick, had a similar issue and jokingly asked if he should quit gi Brazilian Jiujitsu all together and do 10th Planet BJJ.
I answered the question in one of my Chewy ramble videos:
Watch it here: https://youtu.be/I8AQII5nUC4
In that video I talked about letting go of the frustration associated with grips and just continuing to work hard.
In this video I give some more tactical advice on how to maneuver around the grip while going for the submission in Back Mount.
1. One option is to use your hips and body to break the grip so you can come back in for the choke.
2. Another option I show actually involves choking with 1 arm.
3. The last option involves switching the hips to change the Back Mount position and change the choking arm side to finish the choke.
If you’re having the same problem Nick is having with your BJJ training or competition rolling. I hope this video and the tips in it helps!
