STOP Playing the Blame Game in BJJ
“You’re just strong.” This is such a common excuse people use in BJJ. It’s one almost every larger person has heard used as to why they were able to win the roll or match.
Recently I got a question from Adrian who is a bigger stronger guy in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
He says he sometimes get the comment “you’re so strong” in a passive aggressive manner. Both from lower belts but also fellow Black Belts.
I can’t even understand how a Black Belt makes such a insidious comment like this. Playing the Blame Game in BJJ sabotages your game. Because you don’t take responsibility of your own game.
In this video I discuss a couple of the experiences I’ve had with people making excuses about my strength in Brazilian Jiujitsu.
I talk about a funny story related to it. But also how I deal with people who have negative comments about my strength during BJJ training or rolling.
The biggest point I try to make is that we have to take responsibility for our game. And playing the blame game and pointing the finger at others is such a un-resourceful way to train.
Talk to you guys next time.

My BJJ Video Course was Too “Basic” for Him
I’ve only had 1 negative email ever sent to me about my grip fighting course.
I was told it was “too basic” for him.
I didn’t take it too personally. It works great for me and my student’s so I’m just sharing.
But funny enough.
On the very same day a friend of mine and fellow Black Belt sent me an email saying it was helping him and his students a ton in competitions.
1st email was from someone within their 1st couple of years of training.
The other was from someone who’s already dumped almost 20 years into BJJ.
The difference? The Black Belt knows that you can learn something everywhere. It’s a mindset focused on execution and personal responsibility.
There are 2 types of people when it comes to buying video courses.
The 1st group are Collectors.
They collect gis, dvds, books, etc expecting the item itself to make the difference.
Armed with all this they for some reason never get better. And instead of taking the personal responsibility for their game. They blame it on the item or video course itself.
They move on to the next series to buy hoping this will fix it.
This is why people buy a diet plan but somehow never lose weight.
The second group are Executors.
This group knows that the responsibility is on them. That no matter what they watch, read or learn. It’s on them to make it happen.
And make it happen they will!
They do this by mercilessly executing.
By taking in the information they are learning and putting it to practice. Drilling it. Showing it to others. And at the very least using it during rolling.
So whether we are talking about video courses like my “Basic” Grip Fighting Series 😉 (Click here to check it out)
Or even the techniques your coach shows you in class.
If you want a noticeable change. Put that information to use! Don’t just be a collector!
Talk to you guys next time!

The BJJ Gi is Too Unrealistic , But What About a T Shirt ?
I recently went to do some BJJ training with Eli Knight. During our training session we shared techniques and stories.
1 story that I thought was really interesting in regards to Brazilian Jiu-jitsu in a street fight situation involved a man using a t shirt to choke someone out.
The choke is the basic X choke. Something you maybe learned in one of your 1st beginner BJJ classes.
In this video Eli and I talk about the realism of the Brazilian Jiujitsu gi and BJJ training itself.
And Eli also shares this story.
If you’re interested in finding out more about Eli Knight, check out his youtube channel at:
https://www.youtube.com/user/eliknight173
I hope you found the video informative or at least entertaining.
But whether you like the gi or dislike the gi. I hope the points made in the video gave you some perspectives for BJJ training and how it can translate over to a fight situation.
